TV over the fireplace

How high is too high? The top of my mantel is about 70" from the floor. I have 10' ceilings and a 55" TV that is 29" tall. So if I put the TV 6" above the mantel, my TV would 6'-4" from the ground about about 15" from the ceiling. That seems too high for me in a 20'-ish deep living room but I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar setup?
I have plenty of room to put the TV to the left or right of the fireplace. However the fireplace is centered and that would be my natural preference since it's an open floor plan and the TV would be more visible from the kitchen and dining area.

Sit where you usually sit and see how badly you have to crane your neck to see it. For a normal setup, the correct distance from the floor is no more than 30" or so, not 76".

Mount to one side.

That’s about how high mine is and it’s fine.

In my previous house, I had a 65" mounted over the fireplace. However, it was on a mount that allowed me to pull it out and down to a lower, more comfortable level.

Any TV over the fireplace is too high, unless you're watching from the far side of the room.

Sitting on a sofa, I'd be looking over the top of my glasses unless I craned my neck way back to view a TV over the fireplace. Those are the options for this bad idea. OTOH, at 24" off the floor, the TV is at the perfect height and comfortable to watch.

From a long distance, it should be fine. If the sofa/chairs are close, it can be a real pain in the neck (pun intended). I would avoid doing it if at all possible.

Look into a MantleMount. They are expensive but I just got one and love it since my tv is up high in a smaller living room. Pulls down and swivels side to side.

I redid my mantel and surround. Lowered the mantel so the TV is comfortable to watch.

Over the fireplace by default is too high.

I agree and in a perfect world my fireplace would be in the corner and my TV would be centered in the room in standard entertainment cabinet/stand. But that's not an option. My options are TV high over the fireplace OR the TV off to the side which does kind of throw everything off.

I bought a house that had surround sound already installed and an eyesore of a mount over the fireplace. I didn't really want a tv in that room because I wanted a sitting room with a man cave/theatre with my tower speaker surround, guitars, amps, etc.
Well, I get outvoted by Mrs Hopeful, and we use the existing mount instead of trying to reclaim the pullout CRT cabinet/pedastal.
My TV is 65"
I estimate that it is 70-72" from the ground.
There is a very slight tilt downward (probably 5 degrees)
My sofa is probably about 15 feet away.
I don't find it particularly uncomfortable to look at. It is particularly not bad when propping my feet up on my coffee table.
I would definitely do a dry run first. I wanted to just set the tv on the mantle (a difference of about 6 inches with the stand that came with my TV). I again got outvoted. But when it's necessary, I think it's not awful, but that's about the best I can say about it. If you don't have at least 10 feet (and probably closer to around 15), 6'4 is probably not going to be comfortable without being in a recliner/feet propped/ standing from across the room.
