I have an HP laptop. It’s about 4 years old. I have a virus protection and never visit shady websites.

Lately it runs slow, apps are frequently timing out or crashing, and sometimes freezes to the point that I have to hold the on/off button to shut it down and restart.

The programs / apps I use most are excel, word, adobe, explorer, and outlook.

Any of you techys know of any DIY hacks to speed or clean it up?

In the task manager screen, the memory is at 94% (Microsoft edge is at 52.5%). The disk tab is at 100%, looks like Microsoft office is taking the lions share with 2.1MB/s

TIA

Your computer doesn't have enough memory for all the applications that are running. It's constantly swapping pages from the disk to memory then from memory back to disk. I'm guessing you only have 4GB of RAM and a slow 5400 RPM hard disk.

You can either increase the amount of RAM in your laptop. Or decrease the number of applications that are running.

Start by disabling any startup programs that you don't need. CCleaner has a tool for that. If that doesn't help, you need to upgrade your RAM.

Also look up Temporary File Cleaner

LINK /

It's a tiny file that you run to clear out temporary files for every profile on the machine, as well as hidden cache files you may overlook

Honestly with these off the shelf laptops, you could really use a complete windows reload and get rid of all the preloaded BS and start fresh

I would say this as well. And I came to make the install Linux joke too.

In reality, I would install Windows 10 2019 LTSC and that way you remove ALL the bloat and spyware.

If you only have 4gb of ram and a mechanical HDD, another 4gb of ram and an SSD would do wonders for you

Add ram. There are ways to tweak your registry, just type tweak Win 10 registry in search. You can also tweak Google. If hardware acceleration is on, turn it off. Dont pay for any clean up utility, use the free versions, usually the difference between pay and free is an automatic update. Not worth it. Download Malwarebytes and run it, just to be on the safe side. Update your drivers, there are free utilities to do this.
