Of course. Data is data, no matter what the delivery method.
That said, your delivery is limited by whatever you're getting with your phone. Direct internet service will nearly always be faster.
That said, if your phone meets your needs then rock on.

just got an unlimited mobile data plan with AT&T
quote:
AT&T UNLIMITED &MORE? PREMIUM PLAN: Monthly plan charge for unlimited talk, text and data ($55 for single line plan; $100 multi-line plan) & monthly per-device access charges for access to such services apply. Eligible customers can get a discount for having autopay & paperless bill, and a multi-phone line discount. Data Restrictions: After 22GB of data usage on a line in a bill cycle, for the remainder of the cycle AT&T may temporarily slow data speeds on that line during times of network congestion. Includes Stream Saver feature which allows you to stream higher definition video at a max of 1.5 Mbps, in Standard Definition quality (about 480p) on compatible devices (unless video provider has opted out). AT&T will activate the feature for you. You can turn it off or back on at any time at att.com/myatt or call 611. Stream Saver will not recognize all video content. Ability to stream and video resolution may vary and be affected by other factors. Restrictions apply. Details at att.com/streamsaver. HD Video: You can turn Stream Saver off at any time to enjoy access to HD video streaming (up to 1080p), if and when available. Tethering/Mobile Hotspot: Requires compatible device. Includes up to 15GB per line per month. After 15GB, tethering speed slowed to max of 128Kbps for the rest of bill cycle (except Connected Cars). After this, tethering data usage, including sponsored data, will be impacted and not fully functional.

What happens when you need to use the actual phone?

Also, isn't that a lightning port to HDMI adapter, what happens when he needs to charge his phone?
I get the college students and recent college grads finding ways to live frugally, but there's a reason why grown ups with jobs don't eat ramen every meal. Everything has tradeoffs, when you have no money convenience is a luxury. When you do have money convenience often becomes a necessity.

Just talked to ATT. They did say it’s best to turn off stream saver when watching from the tv. Also they said with their network I shouldn’t have issues going past 23gb.

Usually when I watch tv or movies I don’t play on my phone.

There’s another spot for the charger plug in

Well when you live in a hole you can’t stream using shite home internet speeds so you have to look for other options. It works great and I don’t use my phone when I’m watching movies.

This works for a single guy, not for a family

I'm married and it seems to work fine??

Because my home is rural, this is what I do, except I don't use a wire. I cast to the tv. Android >>> Apple.
Screw paying $100 a month for my family to watch Direct TV.

You might want to check your plan again.
Unlimited data and tethered data are counted differently by both AT&T and Verizon.
You don't want to wake up to a $600 plus bill next month.

I checked and they assured me I cannot be charged extra.
