Currently has a Galaxy S7. Looking at maybe a OnePlus or Pixel. Trying to keep him under $700 or better yet under $600. He didn’t act fast enough when the Galaxy 21 was under $700. I’m guessing I can get him there with Black Friday so just looking for suggestions on phones. He doesn’t need the newest so a Galaxy 20, Pixel 5, or OP8 could be an option. Want a brand new phone.

Thoughts?

So, which do you prefer:

1. A phone that spies on everything you do, tracks every data point, harvests and sells all that data to the highest bidder (including government proxies)?

2. A phone that does everything above, tells you about it up front and then also actively tries to use all that data to make the phone work better for you?

Because, with smart phones, there is no 3rd option.

Unfortunately, this is true. Both ios and android are cozy with the communists.

Ironically enough probably the best thing to do (if you're worried about security) is get an android phone like a Pixel and install something like, GrapheneOS. Yes, you'll lose a lot of ease of use and will have to make quite a few accommodations, but if privacy is what you're concerned with then that's probably your easiest option.

Edit: I say this as someone that has owned both iPhones and Android phones. You're not going to find a "sin free" smartphone from what I can tell. You'll just have to decide based on personal preference.

All Android phones are going to have those issues since they will run Snow Cone.

That’s unfortunate. Anything specific?

iPhone

It took years to get a smart phone in my dad’s hands and it was android, so it would be a huge task to switch him to iPhone now.
