Best recommendations for companies to buy equipment and star maps?
What are common things beginners overlook when starting out?

These are the two books I'd recommend.
Turn Left At Orion
The Cambridge Star Atlas
Also stellarium is a VERY useful website/application.
I haven't added anything to this thread, as my scope is an antique. It's a OTI Quantum 6 from the early 1980's. Less than 300 were made. It's a 6", 2,500mm focal length, f/16.8 Maksutov-Cassegrain.

I'd try and buy used first after you have your choices narrowed down. You never know, you might even hit the mother lode at an estate sale. Not everyone is into this hobby and there's steady traffic on craigslist for unwanted scopes.
Also try cloudy nights and Astromart classifieds, at least to get a feel for used prices and initial depreciation. Post up what you wind up with!

I've used both over the years - for buying and selling. I would rank them about equal.

Is your last name "Wray"? If so, we may be related.

Just ordered "Turn Left at Orion" and downloaded the free Stellarium apps.
Found a local astronomy club, but haven't contacted them yet.

Middle....
I never had a use for it until the net came along and I made it my email handle. Then I incorporated it into my ham license of W5ray.

Ah, ok.
Well, received my copy of "Turn Left at Orion" and it was soaked due to yesterday's rain. Usually Amazon will put the package in a plastic bag during bad weather days. Not this time.
The book isn't ruined, but it's definitely not pretty. Very disappointing to have a copy looking like that.

Request a refund/exchange. They are usually pretty good about that.

Great idea. I was just going to let it go, but jumped on Amazon and requested a replacement copy. It was easy. Hope to have a fresh copy within a week.
Thanks again!

Got a nice, fresh copy of "Turn Left at Orion". The Amazon return of the damaged one was butter-smooth.
