Tech stuff you did without reading the docs and come to find out you're doing it wrong...

There's a specialized field device we install/support and I decided to finally read the docs today.
The device has a locking CAT6 jack insert.
Turns out the instructions call for breaking off the lock tab on the RJ45 plug in case the cable ever needs replacement.
Been doing these a long time. Hope I don't need to go replace one of them cables.
Anyone else with the "oh THAT's how you do it" stories?

Can't think of anything along those lines, but I always laugh when my buddy tells the story of him and two friends in 95 or 96 trying for two hours to get on the internet for the first time ever with their AOL CD, only to discover they also needed a modem.

My mom never removed the plastic from lampshades and the first time I saw my wife "tearing up our lamp" I lost it on her.
Well she set me to right straight away
To this day the lamps my parents bought in 1960 still have the clear plastic over the shade.

This also works on the nice greeting cards you buy at Target

So why make it with that if it’s unnecessary?
