Want to buy a wireless surround system - soundbar, sub and two rears.

I was going to go with Sonos bc I thought it would be easiest to play Spotify through Alexa but the optical input being the only method of connection worries me. What happens when I'm watching a movie in Dolby atmos?

Any recommendations? Must be wireless, want to play music through Alexa, may add more rooms later, want speakers to sound great.

Thanks!

If Dolby Atmos is a deal breaker then Sonos is out.

Not sure why they released the playbase without an HDMI input..

Def Tech is awesome if you want floor speakers; I hate my Def Tech soundbar though

So I'm a big fan of Sonos, however, other companies have caught up to them in the last year or 2. Do you already have at least 1 sonos speaker? If so, I'd go all in on Sonos. If not, I youtube the hell out of things and get people's opinions and relate those to what's important to me.

I have kids, so I want a minimalist approach to speakers. I don't want a receiver where my 1 year old can turn the knob and blow my damn eardrums out (has happened more times than I can count and it's why I got rid of a receiver in my house).

So for whatever it's worth my setup is:
1 Sonos Playbar
1 Connect:AMP powering 4 in-ceiling speakers which gives a simulated 5.1 sound experience and we like it

My Playbar has the optical out running to my Samsung's OneConnect (like a mini-receiver that connects to the tv). The optical connection can run to an HDMI splitter with ARC and then use HDMI connections to generate sound too.

If you have a Samsung TV, I think Samsung makes a playbar that supposedly has Dolby Atmos... but I don't know anything about it. I'd do the whole YouTube searches for that type info.

i've conformed to the sonos limitations and have learned to love it (except for the shitty app update last month).

i got in at the right time..just as alexa was being added.

its magical to be sitting in the screened porch smoking a cigar & drinking a bourbon while listening to music on my stereo paired 3s with sub and having alexa remotely turn the outdoor heater on and change stations/pause/skip songs/turn volume up/down without ever moving my fat happy arse from the seat cushion.

even the wife is hanging out there more these days because its a fantastic room to chill in now.

You aren't listen to Atmos with

soundbar, sub and two rears.

If Atmos is what you want then go with a tradional system with Def Tech speakers and an AVR. They had some really nice deals recently, like 20% off towers and a free center channel. They have towers with optional modules for height.

As far as the wireless systems Sonos vs Bose vs Def Tech I would eliminate Def Tech. Ive used them all and Def Tech wouldn't be in the conversation for my house. The Bose sound bar sounds better than the Sonos IMO especially for movies. You want to get the sub with either one you go with. Bose just did an update to the Soundtouch platform and fixed the issue of not being able to rebroadcast a local input to other devices. Also added the ability to add two subs to a sound bar, 3rd party control drivers, and Alexa skills. Sonos individual speakers like the play 1,3,5 sound better than the Bose however I like the hard buttons on the Bose speakers. Bose is also cheaper for their version of the Sonos connect and their amp version, SA-5, has more power than the Sonos connect amp.

There are pros and cons to each.

So I'm hijacking this thread some. I think I have this skill enabled but haven't used it much. What exactly are the commands?
I have a Playbar+Connect:AMP tied to the same room, a Play:5 in 1 room and then 2 separate play:1s in two other rooms.
When I was telling Alexa to play something, it kept doing that "There's multiple devices with that name" crap so I quit.

Suggestions?

CAD, we're getting downvotes based on either liking sonos or our reputations alone.

thats my biggest gripe as well. you have to have unique names for EVERYTHING. i have a 'den' in my house that has smart hue lights, smart ge lights, sonos playbar and a smart outlet.

nothing worked in alexa until i changed names to like "den playbar", "den hue lights", etc.

what are all your speakers named? what groups do you have?

at the moment i have these (and they work fine with alexa)
- bookshelf sonos (a play:1 that i had to add 'sonos' to the name because i have a smart plug also named 'bookshelf' )
- stereo paired play:3 with sub (named "back porch" because i like saying "alexa play groove armada radio on back porch")
- playbar (named "den playbar")

all accept most commands..but its SUPER ANNOYING when alexa misses the "on" part of the command and starts playing music through that tiny arse dot speaker instead. the problem is magnified when you've got the sonos cranked up and you're trying to talk to the dot. what happens is you end up with one radio station playing on the SONOS and another one playing on the DOT and alexa goes into frick OFF mode and won't respond to anything. you have to get that bitch to cancel just the dot music and leave the SONOS alone or cancel both and start over.

so in short, i think your issue is just a naming issue. its annoying because sonos likes to name your speaker group 'den' when you select 'den' as the room and you have to manually change it....then go into alexa and say 'alexa discover my devices' so alexa will pull in the new name.

eta the commands i use most often are

- alexa set the volume to 3 on back porch
- alexa play next track on back porch
- alexa pause music on back porch
- alexa play Billy Ray Cyrus radio on back porch

i dont use the 'alexa turn the volume up/down on back porch' too often because it seems to only go up a fraction. its easier to go from 1 to 10 as i've gotten a pretty good feel for how loud each number is.

eta2

i also like how easily alexa adds stations. if someone comes over and wants to hear something different they can say "alexa play new kids on the block radio on back porch" and if it doesn't exist alexa says "you don't have a station called new kids on the block radio; should i add one?" and if you say yes, alexa says "creating new kids on the block radio, playing on back porch".

Bumping.

Anyone know what other wireless systems are out there that contain all the parts Sonos does, sound bar, rears and sub?

It gets a little overwhelming since some will have a wireless sub with wired speakers as an example, and I want the non-wired Sonos type setup.

The more budget friendly the better as I'm not some audio freak.

Something like the JBL 5.1 may be an option?

Appreciate any helpful guidance

The best wireless speakers I have ever heard are the new KEF LS550W speakers. Will blow anything else listed out of the water. If you truly want great speakers, look at those and find something that can power and control it with alexa

If u want wireless multi room audio with Alexa support there is no reason you should consider anything but sonos.
