So your big hammer in all of this is an opinion piece that relies on clicks and kickbacks?

$300 budget
Self contained stereo system
Better sound quality.

Dayton Audio APA 150 (rebranded Emotiva BPA1) and Pioneer Andrew Jones bookshelf speakers

Or did self-contained mean powered speakers only? Because powered studio monitors don't market well but sound great. Especially KRK Rockit and Presonus Eris.

Sorry but I’m gonna spend more than that b/c nothing at the $300 price point will be adequate.

Maybe that’s where the disconnect is with you.

I think most people that like Bose/Sonos would be more than pleased with Lepai 2020a+ and Dayton Audio B652 bookshelf speakers. ~$75.

No, it's not as good as much more expensive systems. But it probably outperforms any "packaged" stereo off the shelf or most things with integrated amps embedded in the speakers.

you saying there's no application where a pair of stereo sonos:1s does an excellent job?

Well of course there are applications where a pair of play 1’s would do an excellent job.

But check this out

Sonos Connect AMP $499 - you get 55 Watts x 2 and music streamer

Onkyo TX-NR585 $449 - 5.2.2 Dolby Atmos with a powered zone 2 and 80 watts a channel

All the same music streams
4K HDR10, Dolby Vision with video switching
AM/FM radio
Phono input
Bluetooth
Built in Chomcast
Air Play
Google Assistant
Hi-Res Audio Play Back
DTS Play-Fi
Works with Sonos
384khz/32 bit DAC

And the Onkyo app is better than the Sonos app IMO

Now you tell me which is a better value

i'm not talking about a TV surround solution. i get that many people are interested in that TV is not that important in our lives right now. music, however, is.

Ok, lose the video but keep all the other features and it’s $399, TX-8260. So it’s got more power, more features, and is $100 less.

sonos is a self-contained system.

i plug in the speakers, connect to wifi, enjoy high quality audio. (and maybe add a 'stereo pair' and 'true play' calibration step)

nothing more to buy, period.

anything else y'all are recommending is going to be dependent on other things (amp, AVRs, etc etc etc) so the short story here is there is nothing that provides audio as good as sonos for that price point.

If you want to get that restrictive, sure.

But the system I posted literally only additionally needs the phone that's in your pocket + either a Bluetooth adapter or a TRS cable. Bluetooth adapters are as cheap as $10.

I'm glad you enjoy your Sonos. It's not my cup of tea.
