Son getting a ton of spam texts on his phone-how to slow this down

He's had the phone for about a year. It is an iphone, but it is fairly well locked down - no safari or other internet browser, can only text/call people we allow, can't download apps without permission....you know, typical overprotective helicopter parent stuff.
We registered the number on the national do not call list. The calls he gets aren't really the big problem and are relatively infrequent...the problem is that he gets 10 spam texts almost every day....they are all addressed to someone named Allison.
So....I'd like to stop or slow this down obviously...I almost feel like his number was registered previously to someone actually named Allison and she wasn't shy about sharing that number with whichever Prince of Nairobi offered her 1mil since she was some dead person's next of kin....
Anything yall know that I can do?

You can go into the texts, click the little sideways arrow under the number, and three options will pop up. Audio, facetime, and info. Click info, and depending on which iOS it is running either scroll down and click block contact or block this caller, whichever it says. If it is the latest iOS, you may have to select info, then when another screen opens, select Info again, and hit block this caller from there. I've had to do that a few times with these random spam texts I get that have multiple numbers on them. Just block them all and it should slow it down, and hopefully stop it.

I get one spam text every day. There’s nothing you can do about it.

Go to Settings > Messages > turn on "Filter Unknown Senders" (it's near the bottom)
It won't do exactly what you're looking for, but when he receives one of those texts, he will not get any sort of notification about it, and it will be sorted in a completely separate area of the messages app. Will look like this:
Think of it like a "Spam" folder in your email. You'll need to go in there occasionally and delete them all, but at least he won't be bothered all day.

You still get a notification.
eta: since ios14, it doesn’t mute them anymore.

Block the numbers for all the spam texts, and tell your son not to post his phone number anywhere on line so it doesn't get picked up by spam crawlers.
