re: Someone help me with AT&T Next

You don't "have" to trade your phone in on the next plan. All the next plan does is finance your phone interest free over 20 or 24 months. You have the choice of turning your phone in after 12 or 18 months and waiving the remaining payments to start another next plan or just keep your phone and pay it off.

I just switched to it bc it will save me money on the family plan. If you can keep your phone 3 years instead of 2, it will save you a good bit of money.

I'm trying to understand this Next bullshite because it looks like that is what plan I'm on now.
If someone could tell me if I'm doing this right...
If I do an upgrade using Next for the iPhone 6, I'll be paying ~$25/mo for the next 24 months = $600. How in the hell is that more beneficial than a $199 upgrade + $40 activation?

Add $25 per month to your line access fee if you do $199 2 yr contract

Go look at my post on the first page, I break it down.

The thing to keep in mind is ATT Next is nothing more than a 0% finance of the full retail price of the phone. From ATT's perspective, they're either subsidizing your phone (the discount on the price of the phone in exchange for a 2 year contract) or you are buying or financing a phone outright.
The new issue is whether you get a $25/mth discount (on >10gb plans) for having your own phone (financed or bought outright) or whether you give up that monthly discount by having ATT give you a discount on your phone's sale price.

On the Mobile Share Value Plans, if you don't get the free upgrade and have over 10GB of data you get a $25 discount per line per month. Under 10GB the discount is $15 per month.
Also, since we have 3 lines, if all 3 use the Next plan, we will get $75 per month off of the ~$150 bill?

The $25 discount will be on each line you have next or buy the phone outright. The 2 yr contract line will lose that discount.
For the 16gb iphone6, $650 retail or $199 contract, the difference is $450 over two years. At $25 monthly difference on that line, in 2 years, you will have paid $600 more in monthly fees under contract than if you had just paid (or financed) the price of the phone.
Edit: if that wasn't clear, the difference in that example is $150 more paid to take the contract than doing the next plan or paying for the phone outright.

I mapped it out on a spreadsheet for our family plan and the best deal was to do the 18 month AT&T Next play with the stipulation that you actually trade in your phone every 18 months.

Yea, I'm starting to understand I think.
Just to confirm, lets have a hypothetical and tell me if I'm thinking this correctly...
-Mobile Share Value plan has 3 phones with 10GB data, totaling $150 per month.
-All 3 phones upgrade to the new Iphone 6 and starting paying $30/month with Next18 for the phone
-As a result, the bill will drop by $75 each month (3 lines using Next for upgrade to get the discount)
-Overall, the cost of owning the phone is $5 each per month ($30 per month minus the $25 per month savings), and you can trade it in after 18 months for a new one at no charge.

Why does the stipulation matter?
If you actually kept all 3 phones for 24 months and paid them off, wouldn't your bill drop 90 bucks for a few months until you decide to get new phones, assuming you can wait more than 24 months.
Eta:
Also, after 18 months, you've paid for 75% of the phone. Will att allow you to pay the additional 25% and sell the phone outright?
I believe Verizon's plan allows for this, not sure about next

It may not be 30 exactly
It should be the cost of the phone divided by 24 months.
If you did the 20 month plan, you could trade in every 12 months for maybe 5 bucks more per month per line.

Are you sure you don't already have the line discounts for being off contract now? I pay $145ish for 10gb and 3 lines right now. Don't see how you're going to pay $75 for a 10gb plan that starts at $100 before line access fees.
Posted on 9/11/14 at 5:25 pm to Croacka
I'm sure you can just pay the remaining balance on your phone if you want to sell it to someone, probably get more money for it than giving it back to att.

Because AT&T puts you in a cheaper Mobile Shared Value plan in conjunction with NEXT. It might make you better off, it might not. It depends on your current plan.
