Smart Home, Always Listening Devices and Privacy

I've held off on smart home devices for awhile, well except for the useless Dash Wand, but I bit the bullet and went for two Echo Shows for a new house (Nest, a few smart plugs/utilities, etc.), and I'm already seeing the potential. It's just so useful for so many things I typically do. I actually hate using my phone often and sitting in the kitchen with the ability to cook, turn on a timer, and manage a playlist is just ridiculous.
I mean, reading calendars and flash briefing, looking up stuff. I even like the more fun things like this day in history. The Show as a bluetooth speaker, nice rotating picture frame, etc. It really is insanely useful, and that's only over the course of 4 days....
However, the whole privacy thing is bugging me a little at least. I don't have everything connected to the Show, nor will I. But a mic, a camera, just dang. And I'm usually pretty hesitant to adopt newish technology like this.
Am I out of line? Anyone else with Echo/GHome worried that much? I mean, there's convenience....then there's CONVENIENCE. Sure, I could use a tuner radio to play music, a ticking timer to time stuff while I cook, and turn on the TV to get the weather, but yeah no.
At this point, and my reasoning for jumping in, was that The only way to truly avoid privacy/security concerns is to live in an unconnected house in the woods far away from society. It seems data collectin is so good that there is little difference from a laptop that is open 90% of the time along with a phone to something like an Echo or Home. The difference just can't be that large (I know i should have, but I never jumped on the tape on webcam movement, that just seems so minor, honestly.
Anyone else fighting the privacy vs. convenience trap.

Yep. They already have all the metadata on you they'd ever need, an Echo isn't going to change it. If you own a debit card, cell phone, laptop, or work around VOIP phones, you've already been recorded.
Enjoy Alexa, I like her.

Not concerned at all.
Which part is your concern. Like big brother looking in on you, or like a local hacker getting into your shite and seeing when you leave the house and all?
It doesn’t cross my mind. I have a guy I worked with that got an Echo then turned all weird about it because of the thought of it always listening so he sold it. I personally think that’s laughable and idiotic.
But hey different people are different.

I am waiting for a few more Apple Homekit devices to hit the market. I really believe that Apple takes privacy seriously and wants to protect you. Apple sells hardware as its products, not your information.
Google and Amazon are out to get as much information from you as they can to market directly to you or to sell to others who want it.

I've always found Apple's stuff so clunky. I know I'm in the minority, but 'd agree with this statement. There's a reason they are a generally closed system, which sucks for usability in general, but works better for privacy.

I think Google is. I feel like Amazon is out to just sell me more stuff easily, not sell my information for others to use. Maybe I am wrong.

Laugh all you want but Apple is not Google or Amazon with the way it handles your privacy.

Apple is no different than Amazon or Google, despite whatever a tech blog puff piece tells you.

The 3 of them are very different when it comes to user data. Apple hasn't been much of a user data selling machine, it's always been in it to sell their products. Google from day 1 has been about mining as much data as it can and selling it/using it for advertising. Amazon is a mixed bag. Apple and Google are on opposite ends of the spectrum for tech companies when it comes to user data though.

Do not talk about your plans in front of your smart refrigerator.
I was taught that several years ago by significant other #n-2.

People want to bash Apple because they are Apple, and sometimes its warranted but not when it comes to your privacy.
Apple wants you to keep your data on your phone and encrypt it. They don't want to pull it to Apple and sell it.
If people want to refuse to listen about how Apple does keep your data private its up to them.
