And a whole lot of experience besides what he’s researched and put in HIS house.

It’s like. “Sonos sounds great!”

Until you actually experience what really sounds great.

fully integrated control system.

as in i tell alexa goodnight and she offers to lock all my doors and shut any open garage doors?

if only i had a remote laying around to do that...

If that one app controlled everything in your house you would use it everyday.

does it matter what i set them up with originally? alexa and google are integrated into my sylvania, hue, wink, honeywells, etc. to the point its invisible to everyone in my household and the apps themselves are only needed for the occasional firmware updates or to add or remove device.

how is voice control not a single app? its invisible and i spent years with rubberbands around a pile of remotes. why would i want to return to those days?

eta i can't think of a single thing i cant do in my house just by using my voice.

There are other ways to skin a cat other than your way, cad, and they control a much deeper breadth of devices. What you do is awesome. Good for you but you’re stuck with what works with what you chose as a control.

interesting use of terms. i'm not sure exactly what i'm missing out on; my idea of a smart home is that it becomes invisible to everyone in the home.

voice control is definitely more convenient than fumbling for a tablet or a remote but most of my automation is triggered from events, the temperature, a schedule, sunset/sunrise offsets, etc.

i realize there are multiple ways to skin a cat but what i have works very well; the weakest link is the Wink hub but 95% of what is connected to that is zwave or zigbee so when something comes along that appears to be stable enough i'll move those over.

if google or amazon had added zwave & zigbee to their systems i'd already be converted.

How much work did you personally put into getting it to work? Answer. I’ve seen your threads in the past and I already know.

Some people want a professional to come in and provide the solution. That’s good for them.

I’m not knocking what you’ve done. You put the time and effort into it and good for you. I remember when you were against Sonos but you finally tried it and now you champion the cause.

Me? Time versus money. I can generate more revenue for my company if I hire someone to provide a solution. It’s that simple. The same with yard work , pool maintenance. Whatever. If I can generate multiples of what I pay someone to do those tasks by focusing on what I do I choose that path.

Don’t take any of this as a knock. I think you’re a fantastic DIY’er and you’ve done a lot here to show other people that path.

Yup, like the guy who uses a blank wall for a screen and talks about how great their projector looks. They have no idea the difference the right screen makes in picture quality.

I'm not knocking the DIYer either. The smart home industry being hot and booming is good for me. I'm just knocking CAD b/c he is a smart home snowflake. Can't make a comment about anything without him getting triggered and butt hurt over his doodads.

And you can't fool me buddy with you BS. Your wife and kids probably hate what you've done in your house if everything has to rely on voice control or phone apps to be controlled. The more products that have to leave the house and play nice in the cloud to work only means the system is going to be less reliable and inefficient. I know you had issues where you are banging your head against the wall b/c you post about it. It happens. Just watch how much stuff Google is about to break with Nest. That's the biggest problem with this stuff. One day the two brands play nice with each other and boom the next day they don't work together.

This brings us back to the OP, he was asking for a system that ties all his devices into one. I don't believe that question was ever answered for him, but I'm sticking to my original response. Savant isn't what he is looking for given what devices he already owns.

I actually don't have many chicken nuggets right now. Moved into a new place a few months ago and really haven't figured which way I'm going. It won't be soley McVoice control though.

pretty sure i haven't opened the hue app to manually turn on/off a bulb in over a year. the only time i use the app is to add/edit/delete devices.

This is the only way I use my hue bulbs (which I LOVE, I still need to send you pictures of my setup)

What’s the quickest/easiest way that you’ve found to use them? Voice? Different app?

I downloaded the OnSwitch app and played around with it a little m. They have some pretty cool features. The fireworks scene is money

Wink still handles the majority of my automation (with some ifttt sprinkled in for good measure) because you can tie anything together with wink.

I use Alexa to call hue scenes that I set up in the hue app once upon a time that always blow guests away since it changes the lights, bloom, Iris, lightstrips, etc to various color combinations. I have tons of lights connected in my kitchen/dining/poolroom open area.

"Alexa turn on Tokyo in kitchen" is my favorite.

For fun I use hue switcher and huegasm for animated lightshows.

I also have a cheat sheet I keep handy of every color Alexa supports in case I'm looking for a different color.

So everytime you or somebody in your home walks into a room they have to ask Alexa to turn on or off the light ?

Alexa turn on the master bedroom light

Alexa turn on the hallway light

Everytime anyone walks out a room in your home they ask Alexa to turn the light off ?

Alexa turn off light in guest bedroom

Do guest come over and stand in the dark in the bathroom b/c they don't know the Alexa skill to get the lights on ?

What about for your A/V ? Do you tell Alexa everytime you want to raise or lower the volume on your TVs ?

Alexa turn up volume in living room TV

Alexa turn on history channel on living room TV

Alexa lower volume on living room TV

Alexa turn on Fox News in master bedroom TV

Alexa lower volume on TV in the master bedroom

Alexa turn on ESPN in master bedroom TV

Alexa raise volume on TV in master bedroom

Is this what it sounds like when you watch TV in your bedroom ?

Do the people in your home get tired of asking Alexa to manipulate lights and A/V ?

My dog looks at my funny everytime I use Alexa to control a device. He's got this "who the frick is Alexa" look on his face.

I have a niece named Alexis. Every home she frequently visit that has Alexa needs to have the trigger word changed. Found this out this past Xmas. Was pretty funny. The background music would stop everytime you would say her name and Alexa would say some like "hmm I don't know about that".

That's cool how does that work ?

How does your system know somebody walked into a bedroom and the lights need to come on ? Or the reverse when somebody walked out the a room how does it know to turn off the lights ?

Occupancy sensors ?

What about your TVs ? Does your system just know when you want to turn the volume up or down ? Change channels ? Etc ?

"alexa mute the firetv"
"alexa pause the firetv"
"alexa turn the volume down on the firetv"
"alexa play dumb and tigerwise on firetv"

not rocket science.

First I’ve heard of these.. gonna have to check them out

I need to get one single gen 3 bulb, where’s the best place to find one, Amazon? eBay?

Thank you very much for introducing me to HUE.. I absolutely love them, and they are way more useful than I ever imagined.. I always thought it would be just something to show people when they come over, but I’m blown away by how much I change color/brightness, depending on what’s going on in my house. For anyone who’s considering going with HUE, I highly recommend it

Is there any way I can tie my lights into what’s on my TV?

What PIRs are you using ?

You really have these in every room of your home ?

Nobody ever touches a switch, button etc ?

What happens if you walk into your bedroom and your wife is taking a nap ? The light just comes on ?

And for your entertainment all media is voice control ? Nobody ever touches a remote, keypad etc ?

I find this hard to believe but if every single light in your home comes on based off schedule, or motion event I bet your roommates hate it. Same with the A/V, I doubt everything you do for entertainment you only use voice control. Once again your roommates must hate it if your are being serious.

normally no. when my 83yo mom was living with us..all kinds of chaos broke out. but everyone in the house including the kids never touch a switch in any of the main rooms.

for the kids bedrooms i don't even attempt automation beyond having smart switches because they're too unpredictable.

fire TVs are named and you can do everything from voice but yes, we do have tv remotes that also work.

4,2000sf house. 100+ automated lights; outdoor floodlights, garage lights, pool pump, BR30s, 4 pendant kitchen island lights, 12 ikea candlebra bulbs, lightstrips, living room lamps, living room fan, attic lights, laundry room, pool room, back porch, hallway, basement bonus room, bar, dining room and den.

then there's the sonos in every room, schlage door locks, 2 zwave garage door openers and sensors on every door and pool gate...and a mailbox that sings to us when the mailman comes.

yep, 100% of that is automated. the bedrooms are semi-automated with lamps that dim around sunset and the new bathroom has a sonos-1, infrared spa and hue colored lights as well as an LED mirror and automated humidity control.

so yes, i would say my house is damn smart for the most part but you never know when someone wants to read a book in bed so having the lights turn off on a schedule or via sensor is not helpful.

about once a month we tweak something; my wife will say 'i wish the dining room lamps went off at 8pm instead of 9' and 10 seconds later i've made that change or she moves a lamp with a smart bulb into a different room so I have to add it to that room group and change when it comes on or off.

wait, so you are arguing voice control to pause the tv is somehow less automated than looking for one of your wall or remote table gadgets laying around?

Who are you Bill Murray in Grounds Hogs Day ? Your life is that routine that you have the same schedule ? I can see this being ok for exterior/security lighting but it must be difficult to schedule your interior (living room, kitchen, bathroom) lighting for day to day usage.

Way to side step that question

You lying dog you. I knew there was some BS with you

Less automated ? Is that a thing ? My thought process is automated means you don't need to push a button/speak to a cloud to trigger the macro. Automated would happen automatically based off an event or schedule.

This has been fun but honestly tell me more about Hue. Is it zwave, Bluetooth, etc ? Does the bulb, switch, or both have the radio in it. Hue seems like one of the better products out there. I've never messed with it though. I'm at the lighting crossroads in my house and not sure where I'm investigation my time and money. Last thing I want to do is changed out every light load in my house to a brand that gets bought out and doesn't play nice with my system.
