I have a 65 inch TV mounted in my living room.

I'm going to upgrade to an 85 inch TV.

My question... I don't really remember anything about my current mount or where I got it, so I don't know the specs. Is it safe to assume a wall mount for a 65 inch TV will suffice for an 85 inch TV?

It does seem like with a few Google searches it should be fine, but just looking for a 2nd opinion.

It’ll probably fit.

I have about 10 inches in both directions on my mount for my 65” from where the hooks sit.

I would think it’s more a factor of weight than size.

Sounds about right, thanks.

I'd agree. Just when I look at most mounts, it'll say something like 50-95 inches.

Your wall mount is probably fine. They all use standard VESA patterns based on the TV's weight. Your 65 inch is probably 400mm x 300mm. And the new TV might be something like 600mm x 400mm. You could always just look at the spec sheet of the new TV and then measure the wall mount just to be certain.

The problem you might run into is the size of the screws. They're also based on the VESA standards and are bigger for heavier TVs.

Don’t do it. I went from 70 inch to 85. 85 is a tad too much. and I mean don’t get an 85 inch tv. Not talking about the mount lol.

To err on the side of caution, I would buy a wall mount that you know will fit your new TV from somewhere that will accept returns. This will keep you from having to frantically run out and get a new mount when your TV comes in if the current one won't line up.

We just went from a 55" to a 75" and it's pretty damn big. I don't see how we could go much bigger without rearranging the whole living room.

I went from a 65 to an 85 last year and glad I did. Getting older makes it even easier to see it.

When you remove the old TV you can see what the model number of the mount and then look it up to be sure. I replaced a 60” with a 85” a few months back. The mount that I had was rated for the extra weight of the 85”. It’s probably good but I wouldn’t want my 85” TV falling off of the wall because I didn’t verify that the mount wasn’t rated for the extra weight

Mostly dependant on viewing distance and the quality of the TV purchased. 85" from 10' away? Too damned big. From 20' away? Works just fine.

Most mounts have ranges and 55" is usually the cut off before the next set of sizes which is about as large as you can get. You SHOULD be fine. I would only be worried if you bought a cheap Harbor Freight mount but then again, you're usually attaching 4 large bolts to studs and should have no issues.

Buy a compatible mount and if you don't need it, return it.
