Hey guys, I'm needing a router/modem combo for an 1800 sq/ft house.

We have DTV Now so we do mostly streaming including Netflix and Amazon Prime. My wife also does photography so we need something that's great for uploading as well.

Also, any advice for upload download speeds for Internet providers?

Yeah, her and I would have to have a talk if that were the case.

Most advise to get a separate modem and router. Who is your internet through? What's your budget?

We have AT&T but plan on switching to Suddenlink mainly because their higher speeds seem to be more reasonable. I am worried about data cap however.

Haven't thought much of a budget honestly. Under 200 preferably.

If it just you and your wife you probably won't stream more than two things at once. Each stream is probably around 10mbit, so look for internet services between 30-50mbit. Upload really isn't that important for most home users.

Modem will mostly depend on your provider, as you will need to look into seeing what modems your provider will support and provide firmware updates so you don't have to. To get the speeds advertised you will need at least a DOCSIS 3.0 or newer modem.

As far as router most users have systems that are complete overkill. However if you live in a highly congested area like an apartment, I would suggest looking into something with 5ghz. Otherwise most people would be served better served with a 2.4ghz connection thanks to better range. No reason to spend 200 dollars for your needs.

If you are semi tech savvy I would suggest any router that supports easy flashing to dd-wrt or tomato. This is not really necessary, but in my experience open source firmwares have been more stable.

What about monthly data caps? I know AT&T doesn't have one, but I'm not entirely sure about Suddenlink. What would be something to look for? We use Internet a lot but mostly for surfing and streaming.

How many streams do you expect and how many hours?

Standard 250gb data caps are going to be an issue if your wife is at home all day. You probably be burning through 2gb an hour.

Not more than one at once, typically. And I would assume no more than 3 to 4 hours a day streaming. But she does a lot of work from home and she has a photography business/hobby on the side so she does a good bit of uploading as well.

If she is uploading a lot of uncompressed files then you should be looking for something with no data cap or something like 1TB.

I know where I live you typically have to get into the 100mbit services to get the higher caps, so that might be what you need to do. Usually if you try to haggle and offer to sign a contract you can get deals on internet only plans.

That's kind of what I was thinking of doing. Suddenlink offers 100 downld/10upld for $50 a month where as the upload speeds (simply for faster upload times for her photos without slowing the WiFi down as much) for AT&T are higher priced. But it may be worth it for no data cap?

Also, is 10 upload more than enough?

Sorry, pretty uneducated on this

Upload speed will drive cost, really depends on how many pictures.

10 might feel slow when uploading thousands of uncompressed pictures. Is it something she could do overnight?

Yeah she definitely could. It's probably what we'll end up doing. Just trying to make sure I get the best bang for my buck.

Not sure about pricing on your area but 100/10 for 50 isn't bad. Just don't let them charge you all those hidden fees. Pretty sure it is unlawful to charge taxes on internet too
