For the record, I don’t do kodi so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I don't either. I'd rather pay for Netflix, Amazon and now Hulu, along with Directv Now.

I’m in the process of chord cutting and was going to purchase the new Amazon Fire TV as my only streaming device (along with the HD antenna for local channels).

Should I reconsider and get a Roku instead? Since I don’t use Kodi, what gap would exist if all I had was a Roku plugged into my tv?

I have an Apple TV, a Amazon Fire TV and a Ruku and find the Roku the most complete. They are agnostic so they have all the apps. I also find Roku to be the fastest. The ones like I have with voice search is also as good as voice search with the other platforms.

Appreciate it, sir. Any particular reason you have so many steaming options?

I’m looking to view four or five cable channels (HGTV, Food, etc.), seamlessly stream sports via watchESPN, and use Netflix/HBO/AmazonPrime.

The boxes are cheap enough where it’s not a big deal to buy an extra one just to try it out. Plus, most people have at least 3 tv’s.

Makes sense. Based on the criteria I described above, does either Roku or Amazon Fire TV standout as a better option for myself? I’m mainly focused on the content not buffering constantly (given equal internet options between the two devices).

I have heard the Amazon Fire TV interface can be clunky and the sports steaming is less than ideal with frequent buffering.

The reason i don't have cable is b/c I have 6 tvs. When you need 6 boxes, it's an extra $30/month to rent them all, then another $10 for HD, then another $10 for DVR. Their $20/month cable isn't actually $20/month for me.

I have two rokus, for the kids rooms. Got them both free signing up 3 months prepaid for slingtv. Both are Roku 2's and are hardwired in. Both work great.
I have two firetvs, which i use in the two farthest rooms from the router b/c they seemed to have better wireless performance over the roku, when i purchased them 2 years ago.
I also have an Sony tv that is an androidtv.
Going to buy a TCL Roku tv next month.

Steaming hardware options?

Had a Roku 2, obsolete

Amazon Fire TV, first gen. Best option at the time

Apple TV 4, got with the DirectV Now deal for free

Roku Ultra, was waiting for Apple TV 4k, I think they priced it too high and Roku just dropped the Ultra from $130 to $99

As far as steaming, Netflix, must, DirectTV Now, got the $35 deal for over 100 channels and HBO, Amazon, have prime anyway, Hulu, $5.99 is a easy choice.

I use a roku 3 and it’s still extremely snappy.

It doesn’t offer 4K or hdr.

For a new box, I’d just recommend whichever roku is now in the $79-99 range.

I really don’t like the interface of fire tv, and I’m a prime customer.
