would prefer to keep price < $100 and don't want a scanner that requires annual subscription. Bluetooth seems to be the easiest way to read from a cell phone and track history. Would also consider a wired version if it's better and more reliable. TIA

i love the carista. pick up a cheap $20 BT ODBii reader on ebay and sign up for a free month and go crazy changing all those things you want. i'll look up the brand i got but i think any cheap one would do the trick.

off the top of my head in my 4runner i changed

- allow 2 presses of unlock button to roll all windows down (why isn't this enabled by default?? so dumb)
- disabled the horn sound when i lock/unlock the car
- enabled the 'turn key left/right' in tailgate to raise/lower tailgate window
- disabled ALL ECO crap displays, green leaf light, etc.

loads of fun. after i was done i just cancelled the subscription and figured if i ever wanted to make changes again, i'd sign up for another free month using a different email.

ETA, my bad. it was $8

This is the exact reader I bought. No subscription, Carista will recognize it.

I ordered a THINKOBD 100 from Lowe's. It's listed on the site for $29.20.

If you’re going to use it with a laptop, there is almost no price floor, I think my wired one cost $25 and I’ve reprogrammed basic shite on 10? Fords. The cost of ForScan additional, but even the lifetime license will keep you under $100 all in.

Be careful with that one. Our Acura had something similar, but it would also open the sunroof. One morning I go out to the driveway and every window was down and the sunroof was open. Thankfully, it wasn't/didn't rain or the car would have been trashed. Guess the fob's buttons got activated in my wife's purse. Wanted to disable that after.

I have the Bluedriver OBD2 Scan Tool and it paid for itself 10x over. It will read the code, tell you how common the code is for that car, list all the common fixes, and link you to the parts needed on Amazon.

You can also set it up to see all kinds of live info from your running car. (Timing, intake temp, exhaust or turbo temp, throttle position, etc). No subscription needed, but I don't think it does the program changes that CAD703X was talking about.
