Time to upgrade my receiver, but i'm not sure of what i need.

I want HDMI inputs. I also want to have dual zones. For example, i want to be able to play tv inside with my surroundn sound, but also play music at the same time, on my outdoor speaker.

Suggestions of what i need to look for?

There are TONS of receivers that can do that now.

I don't think you can buy a receiver that doesn't have multiple HDMI inputs now.

Plenty of people here that are happy to help but more info will be needed.

What is your budget?
How many speakers inside make up your surround system?
How many speakers outside?

That is for starters.

I just bought the Onkyo 656 for $250 (nomally $400) at Best Buy and it has everything you would need. Multizone as well. From the little I've messed with it, it seems like a really nice receiver. Also, has Bluetooth built in and pretty much every single input that you can think of on the rear.

Onkyo good value. I recently bought the TX-NR777 for $600. But that includes more bells and whistles than most want - 7.2 channel and yes, multi-zone.

Make sure whatever AVR you get is capable of sending all the sources you want to Zone 2.

To a degree AVRs are commodities and similar prices will have similar features but things like room correction software and reliability may be slightly different.

What is your budget?

How many speaker channels do you have inside? 5, 7 or?

Do you need the receiver to power the outside speakers or do you have a separate amp for them or are they powered speakers?

How many speakers do you have in the second zone and do you need video for the second zone?

I assume all new receivers now have full 4K support (HDMI 2.0b and HDCP 2.2), but double check. I'd also get one that supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

Actually, all new receivers don't have HDCP 2.2 but this is only going to be an issue on the very low budget end. MOST of the new receivers will also support HDR10, DV as well as Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG will probably only be important if you utilize OTA broadcasts).
