Why is it that banks and billionaires can transfer enormous sums of money securely and safely, but we haven't figured out how to vote online in a like manner?

One is operated by private industry.

The other by the government.

Well, I hear ya. My guess is that people would be extremely wary of it and it would take a long time for voters to gain confidence in it.

It's not that we can't, we could. It's more a question of why can't we get politicians to put the most secure voting measures in place and why they favor the least secure.

The issue is that for electronic voting to be secure we lose most of the transparency that we currently enjoy. That isn't impossible to solve but it does get increasingly complicated and expensive.
