Question about noise canceling technology and the restaurant industry

I had dinner last night at Overpass Merchant in BR. I have never gone there at a peak time and was overwhelmed at how insanely loud it was in there, so much that you could barely make out the music they were playing. It was very unpleasant and made me wish that I had my excellent Bose noise canceling headphones with me.
This got me thinking about noise being one of the most non food related complaints about restaurants. Is there a product, similar to the headphones, that would be able to cancel out most noise in restaurants to make it more tolerable? Or does this have to be done on a more individual basis?

I almost had to resort to that because of this one a-hole with a voice like a jet engine.
I was really wondering if there was a product that a restaurant could purchase that could cancel out noises to make a loud dining room a little more tolerable.

There are wall patterns in an accustical pyramid pattern that could be attached to all surrounding walls. Might would work in a darkly lit room.

There are companies that specialize in Restaurant noise abatement. They do things like hidden fabric cells under chair bottoms, wall decor etc. It's a expensive service.

Episode of The Profit showed a company that offered sound absorbing and dampening items. It was a good show. LINK to story about episode

But why couldn’t you do it electronically like the headphones do.

We have white noise sounds at work. Sounds like air blowing. You can see people talking about 20 ft away but not hear them. Mainly for a cubicle environment. But that might work in a restaurant.

I wish I knew. There are so many places I hate going to because of the damn noise, most recently The Chimes on Highland and Lit Pizza on Burbank. It was torture just getting a pizza to go.

Passive noise cancellation is WAAAAAY cheaper than active noise cancellation.
That place is notoriously bad. I went over a year ago and the server mentioned they were working on the acoustics. It has a ton of hard reflective surfaces.

Had a new client insist on meeting for the first time there for lunch. Good food but loud AF in there.

quote:Because noise-canceling headphones only work because they completely cover your ear (or canal). They can't completely block all external sounds, so the "active" noise-canceling part (the electronics) means they "listen" to external sounds and generate a sound wave 180 degrees out of phase with it. This pretty much cancels out the sounds you don't want to hear.
But why couldn’t you do it electronically like the headphones do.
To do this in a restaurant, the guests would have to wear headphones, or each table would have to be in a cubicle or something. Because there's no way to use some electronic device around the dining area to achieve the same thing that headphones do. There's just no way to cancel a sound going from point A to point B without something in between the two points. So putting sound-absorbing materials all over is pretty much the best way to reduce noise without completely changing the experience of eating at a restaurant.

Thanks for that concise explainatiion.
It was so loud in there I wished I had my Bose headphones with me.
