LINK
I built the folded Dipole, the first link. I ordered my Balun Transformer off of Amazon for about $5 and put it together with some wood hanging in my shop. It doesn't look as good as the one in the pictures but it works like a damn charm.

Any reason why I wouldn't be able to hide this behind the tv under my patio rather than in the attic and trying to fish a line down an exterior wall?
Posted on 3/21/16 at 2:35 pm to lsugrad35
Its ugly as hell..about the only reason. But height is a big difference in signal strength. If it's in the attic you'll get a lot more channels. I couldn't catch CBS before I put it in the attic

Damn that's what I figured.

It all depends..my buddy lives in Metarie and he has his antenna right behind his TV in the living room. He catches everything

It's not so much where you live it's what you live around.
I couldn't get all the channels with the Mohu behind the tv in the living room, which was pretty much the center of the house, but catch them all in the window which faces west and has few trees in the way.
Trees and house materials make a big difference.
The antenna i have in the attic catches all channels perfect all the time. When i had it in the living room behind the tv, CBS and ABC would sometimes not work.
It's really not that hard to drop some wires from the attic, especially if you already have some dropped. I put an antenna in the attic b/c i wanted to drop ethernet lines, so if i was already going to do that, then i might as well drop the antenna cable too. My directv install guy gave me a extra wireless reciever b/c he didn't want to drop the line in the living room with my vaulted cielings and clutter of air duct work where the drop would be, but i did it.
if you do it, you better do it soon b/c you're going to die in your attic if you wait until summertime.

I'm interested in dropping some Ethernet lines.. just haven't gotten around to it yet.

My Roku3 hardwired in does things almost instantly. It can take me 30 seconds to put on Paw Patrol for my kids in the morning on the Roku Stick. Probalby has a lot more to do with the device than the internet.
To change a channel on slingtv on my hardwired Roku 3 takes about as much time as it does to change the channel on directv. It takes at least 10 seconds to change it on the fire and roku sticks.
If i'm going to rely on my internet to watch an LSU game, i want to be hard wired in.

I blame this on the damn Paw Patrol

I'd like to hardwire out on my patio, but I don't want ethernet running down or through my hardie plank

For those of you who are asking about FireTV (box not stick) with Vue, I would say it's great. My FireTV is hardwired, if yours isn't your mileage may vary.
As far as the Vue UI, it's as smooth as anything on a FireTV. Android TV is the gold standard for smooth UI's, and I'd say FireTV is one notch down from that. It's ahead of all the shitty sticks out there, and Roku boxes.
I think the PS4 is probably the gold standard Vue experience due to all the shortcuts on the remote to get directly to DVR stuff, as well as a slightly improved guide, but the FireTV experience is great. No complaints.

I would not trust wireless when watching a LSU game, but that just me.
Come out the eave of the house, where i'm assuming you probably have an electrical outlet that you are using for this tv.

Here is my AndroidTV vs. Roku vs AndroidTV review. All boxes, no sticks.
The only pro on Roku is that it is service agnostic. Since Roku doesn't sell anything but devices, they do not try to influence your options. You can access content from amazon, google, etc. Basically everything but Apple. It probably wins the voice search competition, though it's still not perfect.
The cons on Roku is it has the slowest and ugliest UI, and in my opinion does not have a "signature feature" that is uniquely Roku. You also cannot and will never be able to install Kodi on it. The plex app is ugly if not serviceable.
AndroidTV I thought was my savior. But it never really panned out. The UI is buttery smooth and responsive. It's got two killer features: youtube voice search and the live channels app. The live channels app can theoretically serve as an aggregator to put all of your live content in one app in a gridded TV guide. In practice, not enough live apps support the feature. My HDhomerun supports it, so all of my over the air content is fed into the app in a cool TV guide. SlingTV is rumored to be supporting it this year. If so I'd have all of my live content accessed in one app just like a cable set top box. But my patience is running short. Android TV is also the best Kodi and Plex experience.
The cons on AndroidTV are that it doesn't have WatchESPN (SERIOUSLY WTF!!!) and that Amazon doesn't support it...and now Vue also doesn't support it. It also doesn't seem to be much of a priority for Google. It's like they have a winning lottery ticket and won't cash the damn thing.
FireTV is somewhere between AndroidTV and Roku from a UI speed standpoint. Closer to AndroidTV than Roku. Pros here are Vue, Alexa (!!!), and getting your prime content in a beautiful UI. Alexa is truely great, home automation, audible access, pizza delivery, all from speaking into your remote from the couch. Seriously, the future is here.
My big con is no Google Play app store. Since I have an android tablet and phone, this is a pretty big deal to me. It's also easier for me to build up free Google Play credit than Amazon credits, so double whammy... If you aren't tied to the google ecosystem in any way this may not be a big deal for you. I also think FireTV has the worst voice search. It only returns hits from amazon products. No Plex, no netflix, etc. It is open to 3rd party apps, but so far it hasn't been that useful to me.

Thanks for the review on the Fire TV
Can you rate your experience with the PS4 and Fire TV?

I don't currently have a Fire TV, but I wanted to play around with the vue trial. Unfortunately, it looks like I can't play around with the ios UI because you have to configure a profile on a tv-connected device before it will let you sign onto the app. This is bs.

so you're talking about an androidtv box?
My tv is an androidtv and it has slingtv. If it had WatchESPN i wouldn't have needed to get the Roku3. And i have Kodi on it. It would be nice to have one UI that can let me watch local channels, netflix, hulu, WatchESPN, etc, and only use the remote the tv came with.
I don't understand why they don't have WatchESPN or even why they don't have Playstation Vue. I can play a streaming playstation game on my tv with out an actual playstation, but they don't have Vue accessible on Android tv. C'mon Sony.

If that question is directed to me, I can't really answer.
I have a PS3 and a FireTV no PS4. I have a buddy with a PS4 and spoke to him on the phone trying Vue. Everything I like about the PS3 version (slightly better guide and button shortcuts) are true on the PS4, but without the UI lag (according to him).
I haven't seen it in person, but based on that feedback, I'd say PS4 is the best Vue experience. Again, I have no complaints on the FireTV version though.

Yeah that was to you. Good stuff. Glad to know others without a PS4 can enjoy the service without a headache.
I just ordered a PS4 Universal remote control and will be signing up for Vue in the next few days.

Yes, I'm talking AndroidTV box. Specifically the Nexus Player.
AndroidTV supports CEC control. So I can get local channels (via HDhomerun), netflix, hulu and only use my TV remote. No universal remote necessary. It's awesome. The noteworthy omission there is freaking watchESPN. I have to cast from my tablet. And now Vue is another omission.
FireTV does NOT support CEC control (ETA, well it does, but it's shitty). So I bought a Flirc and plugged it into a USB port in the back and control it with my Harmony. Obviously I lose voice search with my harmony, but I find that FireTV's voice search is just useless enough that I don't really miss it. Or I can just find the FireTV remote and use it for voice search. However, I get locals, netflix, EVERYTHING on firetv without switching inputs. Just switching apps. I think Vue has finally tipped the scales in my house in favor of the FireTV for the winner of the streaming box trade study.

Fire Stick is working with my HDTV remote right now
My PS4 works with it too, but I haven't messed with Vue.

It's spotty.
Home button and back button don't work on my TV remote with FireTV. Play/pause, directional buttons, and select does work.
