Hey all,

I've been scoping out the market for the last two years to eventually switch from console to PC gaming. When I started, the DIY build seemed to be way too expensive because of all the GeForce 30 series graphics cards being in such high demand. I'm checking now and the RTX 40 series is now out. I guess I have two questions:

1. Are the 30 series good enough to play 120 Hz, 4k gaming for the future, or should I spend a little more to go with a 40 series?

2. Is the pre-built PC market much better now than it was during COVID, and would it make more sense to buy pre-built, even if I were to learn/have help assembling with a friend?

A 3090, and maybe 3080, would be fine for the future at 4k/120, but no one will know for sure. The 3070 and worse isn't even great at 4k/120 right now

As graphics continue to get better, I just don't see the RTX 30/RX 60 series cards being able to keep up at 4k/120. To take it a step further, I don't think any of the RTX 40/RX 70 series fit the bill, either, outside of maybe the 4090. And even then, I'm not sure.

With all of that said, someone can obviously put together a killer gaming rig right now. I just wouldn't want expectations to be off, because chasing 4k/120 into the future is going to be a very, very long row to hoe.

Might I ask why do you need 4k/120? I just have never seen a difference in like 80 and 120 in games I care about 4k. When I care about fps, I don't care about 4k. That's just me though.

I have a 8700k/RTX 3070 right now and I get pretty solid fps in 1440p with DLSS. I know it's not 4k but any game I play, I've been well above the threshold of "I don't need any more fps"

As far as prebuilt vs DIY, I like DIY bc I know what's going in it. The cost for the total package might be the same but the components inside will be better in the DIY as the labor/marketing cost was not added in the DIY.

Nahhhhhh

If I’m playing fps games, I want fps and don’t really care about image quality.

If I’m playing a rpg, I don’t need 120fps. 60-100 is just fine. There's No twitchiness in those and mainly front centered.

Many pre built ones will have very limited ram upgrade options. I learned that with a few HP and Dell machines recently. When you build you have a lot more ram options.
