If you didn't know, it's owned by Amazon/Bezos and they just announced they're killing it next month.

Seems bizarre to me, considering they had a complete monopoly on all things photography on the internet and camera reviews in particular. I can't imagine it was that expensive to run. I'm sure it's not the most lucrative space anymore, but I would assume there is value in being the gold standard in that space.

Wow, I can't believe this. This was the gold standard for camera reviews.

Says a bunch of people who probably hadn't used the site in 10 years... It was a great site that I used many times over the years but I can't remember the last time I shopped for a digital camera.

I am by no means serious photographer, but I considered this site to be very useful to learn about digital cameras and photography.

Are you a photographer?

I agree that the market has shrunk for regular people, but those who are in that community at any level probably buy a camera/lens at least once a year or so. I'm just an occasional enthusiast but I fall into that and I'm sure gear whores/pros/very active amateurs do it a lot more than that.

I'm not in any of those camps and I've relied on the site and the YouTube channel consistently for years. There is quite simply nothing else out there like it. Within the confines of the photography community, it's the equivalent of killing off IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes.

Camera phones killed the digital camera market. However, there has been a significant uptick in interest and expenditures in cameras and photography in the last couple of years.

It seems like they weathered the bad days, only to abandon their little corner of the internet when they should be seeing a measurable uptick in traffic

I used to go for the reviews, and also spent a lot of time browsing the forums. I got into the hobby, I own a couple Olympus m4/3 bodies, adapters, and a bunch of old manual prime lenses. I think I have almost a complete set of Rokkor lenses.

I checked recently, and honestly, the site was a shell of it's previous self.

The reviews used to be a profoundly thorough evaluation of the camera, from RAW and JPG performance, body contruction and style, f-stop and exposure, etc etc etc. You could run cross-comparisons to many other different cameras, all tested with the same standards (most with samples of the same test scene for real-world comparison).
The most recent reviews were 1 page tripe.

I can't tell you how much knowledge I gleaned from the forums, on setting up RAW pipelines with different software to run smoothly. Again, that's all now gone, people just like iPhone photos.

I used to really depend on them when I was in the camera market and the film world was changing so much every day. Then of course to purchase my first 5 digital cameras as well. I feel like now the sensors are better than really needed and so we've hit a bit of a plateau as far as need goes. But I thank them for their service.

I like Ken but his reviews are just so formulaic even if they are, at heart, true

"This is a good camera. This previous generation was already good and you should get that one unless you don't care about money. Both are better than you. Here's how to increase the saturation on this camera. It's metal so it's awesome OR it's plastic so it sucks. I recommend it."

One thing I liked about DP Review was that it was possible to see the country manufacture origin on most cameras.

Now only Rockwell mentions that.

He’s independently wealthy. Doesn’t need it.
