My CreditWise account with Capital One has sent me an alert stating that my email address is on the dark web and I need to take action.

It is a Cox account and I have noticed an increase in phising emails coming in. Mostly mimicing Cox and saying they've upgraded emails and I need to update mine.

Here is an article regarding a massive breach:

I use Protonmail's password manager called, ProtonPass. Set 2FA up for anything important. Use aliases for your e-mail address. Don't ever use your real e-mail address to sign up for anything.

Change important passwords every few months.

I have been using LastPass for a few years. When I get one of these notices about an e-mail & password potentially compromised; I can go through and see if any other sites use similar e-mail/password combos and change those accordingly.

Since I have started using a password manager, I let them "choose my password" to give me a purely random password. Only exceptions are I will use similar styled passwords for things I need to share with the wife. I.e., all tv subscriptions are similar e-mail/password; when I change one I change them all. All home related services (alarm, utilities, target...) will share e-mail/password combos.

The other thing I have started doing in the past year is when I stop using something (ADT, bed bath & beyond, fantasy football...) I will go in and delete as much shite as possible. If allowed reassign to a throw away e-mail address, then change the password to something suggested. If they get hacked, I don't have to worry.

Bitwarden Password Manager

I prefer Bitwarden for password management but there are a lot of good ones out there. Pick one.

Turn on MFA on EVERY account that supports it and NEVER re-use the same password. Every password used should be unique, long, and complex. Longer is more important than complex, though.

If you want to go a mile further, create a new email account then add an alias on it. Only expose the alias to the world since an alias cannot be used as a username to login to email (on most email services). For example, create an email account such as user1@email.com. That will be the username you will use to login to email.com. Then, create an alias such as alias@email.com. When you sign up for services such as tigerdroppings.com, use alias@email.com since it can direct email back to user1@email.com but cannot be used to login to your email.com account. While this technique will not cut down on phishing and SPAM, it will prevent a lot of brute force attacks. Stay safe.

Agree. You need to change your password and enable MFA. Use unique passwords for every site. Look into a Password Manager to easily manage all unique passwords.

Can you guys recommend one I can setup for myself and monitor the wife? She's always clicking on ads and I can't seem to prevent her from doing it.

I use Privacy Badger (Edge add-on, but can be found for Google Chrome as well). And I use my ad killer which is built into my VPN program.

I don't see ads on any web site.

I've been with Surfshark for several years. It's great. You can often find huge discount codes online. I personally use HONEY and CNET as browser add-ons that search for the lowest prices or coupon codes.

And yes, to your other question.
