Anyone here have experience using a home theater receiver (Onkyo 5.1) outside? It would be under my covered patio (20x40) and hooked to my patio TV. I am pretty much committed to doing it since I have an unused receiver collecting dust in a closet but I am curious if the more complicated electronics are likely to die sooner than the TV. Also, what about a powered subwoofer? I would like to hookup a powered sub to it. That would seem to me to be a lot more susceptible to humidity and other things (critters getting in the sound port or eating the speaker material) It is a large covered patio so none of the electronics are exposed to rain or direct sunlight. When bad storms are coming I have a cover for the TV and I would certainly cover any other electronics out there. None of the stuff I have outside is top shelf stuff because I expect it will die sooner rather than later. Just curious what others have experienced.

I had a receiver outside for like 10 or 12 yrs at my old house. Just plugged in a few inches from the ceiling on the patio.

A ported sub seems like a bad idea. I would look for one specifically built for outdoors.

If I were starting over, I would buy the cheapest Pyle receiver on Amazon and run it until it dies

I used an only onkyo outside, when it stopped working and I opened it up it was so corroded I couldn't believe it worked as long as it did. If you can put one inside, running wires outside is easy. Get a powered outdoor sub, they make some that are surprisingly good for a few hundred bucks.

I hear you. Looking for a powered outdoor sub ain't easy. There are plenty of outdoor subs but most are not powered or have to be buried.

How long did your receiver work before it died? I can live with having to replace my outdoor receiver every few years. The one I'm going to use now I don't worry about since it wasn't being used but when it comes time to replace it I can get a 2.1 unit for 150 bucks or so. I don't spend a ton of money on my outdoor stuff because I know it won't last.

I have been using low end home theater receivers on my back patio for over 17 years now. Originally the receiver just sat on a bookcase shelf I built. It was wide open exposed to the mist, humidity, fog, etc. Rain couldn't get to it, but everything else could. The receivers would corrode and die every 2-3 years. After the third receiver died I decided to turn the bookshelf into more of a outdoor cabinet. I put a door on the front. I haven't replaced a receiver since. The current receiver is a low end Yamaha R-S202 and it is approaching 10 years in that environment. My backyard patio has a north exposure. YMMV.

Thanks for the reply. That is very helpful information. So this bookshelf you made into a cabinet, is it open to the rear? Do you open the front door when using the receiver? I'm thinking ventilation issues. Your solution is obviously working if you've gone 10 years with your current setup. That's what I'm trying to achieve right there.

I have an onkyo outside, under a patio in a cabinet. Been running that thing well over 10 years. Small sub is in the cabinet with it. I run the directv, appletv, roku and Alexa hooked up to it and then to the TV.

Yes, it is open to the rear. The cabinet sits against the house, and there isn't a large gap between the house and the back of the cabinet. The gap is only what the siding allows. I do have to open the cabinet to turn the unit on, not a big deal. Most of the time we stream music from Spotify, so the door stays closed after we turn the unit on.

I’ve been using a Denon with a 10 in. sub next to it on top of a refrigerator. It’s in my outdoor kitchen and have had no issues
