Um yes. Pretty easy answer. I'm not saying it's illegal but it's not something i'd ever do. Pretty fricked up.

If you can't look at the situation and tell automatically it's an uncool thing to do that's fine. I'm not here to try and change your code of ethics or anything. Let's just move on.

If you followed mctiger on here you would see he does this all the time.... not just with wink. He loves to find deals/closeouts at home depot for himself and also to resell.
I've personally bought a few things he picked up at home depot from him and he made a little money off them sure but I bought them well under msrp and was happy he found them when I wasn't able to.
There is a service in Nashville that drives to Atlanta IKEA to pick up and deliver stuff for people who can't/don't want to make that drive. You pay double the price of the item oftentimes but for a lot of people it's worth it because there is a effort involved in making that trek.
MC is like a home depot closeout dealer.

Thought I'd post my latest HA install. If anyone wants to automate their garage for ~$30, I installed a GoControl Z-Wave Isolated Contact Fixture Module in about 20 minutes. Works like a charm. Full integration with SmartThings (Wink will work seamlessly as well). Also integrated with alexa.
Cut the female end off of an old computer power cable. Wired the ground, neutral and line to the contact fixture module, then the two remote wires tie into the terminals that your garage door button connects to.

Wait why was all this necessary? It didn't come with the proper wiring?

It's a fixture module that can be used for anything that you want to add z wave to: lights, switches, appliances. The easiest way for me to get power is from the 120v socket that the garage door opener is plugged into. So I just soldered it to a wall plug. My use case is probably the minority for these things.

so i just ordered one of these suckers:
aeotech micro dimmer doodad
i've got 2 gang box by my pool with 4 half-height toggles. (2 of these):
- 1 the outdoor lights on the wall around the pool
- 1 the 600w pool light
- 1 the post light
- 1 not used
so i put a GE link bulb in the post light (since the intermatic is working like a charm..dont need to put an expensive zwave bulb in there for now)
however i WANT to dim the 3 lights (each have 3 candelabra type bulbs) around the pool because they are bright as hell and i hate getting ready to go to bed only to realize those frickers are still on..its a long trek down to the pool.
so this little do-ma-hickey should do the trick..function as on/off and a dimmer.
the bad news is it won't work for the pool light itself but i try to avoid using that because..its 600watts..
the other option is a little 2-relay thingie that would handle both light switches but it doesnt dim..and for me dimming is more important than controlling that stupid underwater pool light which will probably burn out at anytime anyway.

frick that. use a door sensor or something and a smart bulb.
my attic lights are on pull lights and i put trippers on them (yes i'm a baller with 2 attic stairs..woo wee) and wrapped the cords around the rafter so my wife & kids HAVE to wait for the tripper to activate the light

so far so good.

Haha, that was supposed to be pool. Would beat walking over to turn it on when I want to use it.

Yes you saw how far away my damn lights are. No way I'm walking down that scary Rock path in the dark.

Does anyone have experience with smart outlets? I'd like to install one in the kids room so it will turn her electronics (tv, dtv box, etc) off when she leaves the house since she finds it impossible to do so. (I played around with the tv settings and could not find any type of power save option).
Everything is plugged into a surge which is in turn plugged into the outlet. Would it still turn everything off since the surge is plugged into the outlet or does the device you want to manipulate have to be plugged directly into the outlet?
Thanks.

i'll sell you one of my outlinks for $10 if you are interested.
one outlet is 'smart' (on/off controlled by hub)..just plug the surge protector/power strip into this one
one outlet is regular
the app tracks energy usage for the entire outlet and uses your geolocation to determine what your energy rates are to put that into a $

Honestly I've been trying to only use things that I can control natively with SmartThings. But it sounds like you're saying as long as the surge is plugged into the zwave outlet (and not the standard one) then everything that is plugged into that surge will turn off when she leaves the house?
I'm sure your outlet would work with ST, just not the energy reading function.

See my concern is if she leaves the house and it turns the outlet off which in turn turns everything in the surge off the dtv box wouldnt function properly while she was gone (record shows). And when she came home and the outlet turned back on it seems like the dtv box would probably go through a setup screen instead of just turning on.

Plug the DTV box into a non smart outlet

Yeah. Or just into the top outlet since only one of them is zwave. Would definitely work.
Are there any out there that both outlets are zwave? I'd like to install one in the outlet the wife uses for her straightener.
