I bought the SD card for future downloads, but I bought a couple cartridge games for him to open on Christmas as well.

blame nintendo & other manufacturers who lure you in with that 'low price' then you realize you only got one game controller, no games & you have to immediately add storage space.
sony & microsoft do this too.

I will say this, if you want a controller, buy the pro controller and nothing else. I have tried multiple knockoffs for a second controller, and they all suck.

I got this controller for my son almost 2 years ago and it’s still going strong.
LINK
For those asking about animal crossing, my son was 6 when he got it and he got bored very quickly. He said “dad, all I do is fish and catch butterflies”. I’m sure that’s not all there is to the game but he likes more action. I watched him play it a few times and I didn’t get the hype over the game. He is 7 now and plays Super Smash Brothers, Mario Galaxy, Mario Odyssey, cabelas hunting, and Mario kart mostly. So I guess it depends on what your kid is into.

Animal Crossing is the exact opposite of the type of a game a kid generally enjoys. ACNH is a great game for adults who have suffered through work and all the stresses of being an adult for 12 hours and just want to unplug - catching fish and bugs, buying and selling furniture, and writing letters to neighbors are literally massive parts of the game

You use them in conjunction during single-player mode but they can be separated in co-op play HOWEVER my experience is that this is usually a gigantic pain in the arse. My wife and I tried to setup co-op on Kalahari Damacy for 15 minutes before we both go so frustrated that we just turned the shite off.

I got one of these for my kid for Christmas. Haven’t had a video game system since my Xbox 360, so I’m out of date here. Do I need to buy a controller? I see it comes with the side controllers but do we need the Xbox style ones? I got Mario cart, Minecraft and Mario party so I’m thinking we’ll need controllers for the whole family to play. I can’t believe how old I sound smh.

The controllers that attach to the sides are called joy-cons, and yes they absolutely work.
You only need to buy more if you want to play multiplayer games. I would buy the pro controller or a cheaper one in that style. You don’t really need more joy-cons. Mario Kart is way more fun when multiple people are playing.

Update: My son got the switch on Christmas morning. I also bought an extra controller so my daughter can play too. We played it on Christmas day. Fast forward to the day after Christmas and I was searching all over town to find 2 more controllers so we wouldn't have to take turns. We have been playing Mario Kart non stop and having a blast. Thanks for all of the help.

We've been playing Lego Worlds. He started on Luigis Mansion, but has been non stop lego world. Mario kart and super mario odyssey are still untouched.

6yo started out playing Mario kart but quickly fell in love with marvel avengers Legos. We've been playing that.. Or building with real Legos nonstop ever since.
2 controllers are nice. Wife hates video games so it's just me and the little turd.
