My son wants one for Christmas. Can anyone give me the scoop on these things? Are there different versions, storage capacity and so on? Thanks.

They come in Switch and Switch Lite varieties. The Switch can be used docked to the TV and handheld, has detachable joy-cons. The Switch Lite cannot be docked to the TV (handheld only) and you cannot detach the joy-cons.
If he wants to have all digital games, he'll need a MicroSD card.
Currently there is a Switch bundle that includes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and 3 months of Nintendo Switch Online for the $299. There is also a Fortnite bundle that has some V-Bucks and some skins for $299. There is also an Animal Crossing version and the normal console in gray or neon
I know several of these are sold out at Best Buy. Other retailers may have them in stock though.

The bundles might be hard to find at this point at MSRP.

They are pretty much sold out everywhere. I found one at JL games in NY and ordered it for $399. That is just for the console.

I am worried the pre-order won't be herein time for Christmas and my wife does not want the fortnite bundle.

She wants the blue and red one or maybe the gray.

Well, the blue and red is showing available on Best Buy as well right now for pickup on the 8th.

i just set my son's up today. you will absolutely want this set up before christmas morning. the lego marvel superheroes 2 game is $9 on sale (digital only) but the sale ends today and for some inexplicable reason, nintendo won't let you buy it without first setting up the console (looks like people have been bitching about this for 2 years)
here is my experience:
- everything in the box is 'non destructive' meaning you can slip everything out of the sleeves and put it back in without having rip anything open so it will look like new christmas morning.
- make the nintendo password something easy to key in because you'll have to enter it about eleventy billion times during the setup process.
- there's a 'scratch & sniff' card for mario kart you'll need to enter and then download (which will take awhile so do this before christmas morning)
- you get 300 bonus points for downloading mario kart which is $3 so i bought the lego game for $6.97 after tax. no reason not to go ahead & use that credit.
- there's another scratch & sniff for the 3 free months of online..no reason to do that now. wait until there's something he wants to activate that so you don't start the countdown. i'm guessing my kid won't notice or care in the beginning so i may not even pull that one out until sometime next year after he's gotten tired of the games he has now or wants to do something that requires 'online friends'.
i'm fully charging mine up so it will be good to go when he opens it. looks like it came with about a 60% charge.

The switch is an awesome console. Get Mario kart and some extra controllers and the whole family can bind.

Why are the controllers so expensive? Which controllers are recommended?
BTW, props to CAD for recommending turning it on and setting it up before Xmas. This makes a lot of sense.

My wife bought me the Nintendo brand pro controller and it's so much better to use when you are playing on your TV. The joycons are ok, but the pro controller feels way better. It's basically the X-box controller design. But yes they are expensive. Listed for $59 right now on Amazon. There are others in the $25-40 range, but I can't comment on the quality of those.
Edit: Apparently the $59 is a Cyber Monday deal. Normally $69. Nice

Looks nice. I wonder if that will start to fade after heavy use. My switch has basically been a Mario Odyssey machine the last month or so lol. May go back and finish up Zelda before I buy the new one. I needed a break and just wanted to play something easy.

Was absolutely supposed to be doing that today on my mario kart bundle from gamestop that was supposed to be delivered Sunday, but it's been hanging out in MS!

Does setting it up leave any info on the tv? I wouldn't want them to figure it out.

No it doesn't, but you can set it up on the console without connecting it to the TV.
