new ssd hard drive in laptop

I just bought a new ssd drive to put in my laptop. The old drive won't boot to windows;however, by pressing F12 during startup I can get to windows. I am replacing the old drive with a new ssd drive and would like to know a good way to get the new drive up and running. I know how to physically replace it. My knowledge of the hardware side of a computer exceeds my knowledge of the actual usage of it. I can get around with it pretty good but it's certainly nothing to brag about. I've read numerous articles on the subject but I think it's a good idea to consult here on TD due to the depth of knowledge I've seen here so many times. Thanks for any help!

Is it windows 10? I would use their installation tool on a USB stick and boot from there.

New SSD should offer some type of data transfer capability so that you can transfer and install new SSD and boot up fine...

I just swapped out a small SSD for a larger SSD on my *Desktop* machine. I first cloned (not copied) my existing drive to the new drive (my PC thinks it's the same drive). Worked like a charm. There are many free utilities out there to clone (not copy) drives.
Obvious question: Have you tried opening BIOS and simply change the primary drive your laptop looks for at startup?

for what purpose?
On the cloning- you cloned your hard drive onto a USB drive--changed out your hard drive-and then just loaded the clone onto new drive?

quote:Instead of Old Drive > USB > New Drive, why not just go Old Drive > New Drive and skip the USB. No need for the USB middle-man (unless lack of a cable is an issue), although you could clone to a USB for a security blanket.

What would stop a Dell Inspiron 3780 with ssd c: drive from being cloned?
I haven’t had the good luck others have.

quote:I wouldn't think the specific model number (in this case a Dell Inspiron 3780) would matter. I think the worse that can happen when you clone the old drive to the new drive is that you'd have 2 good, identical operating SSD's instead of one. After cloning, unplug the old drive; connect the new drive, and that should do it. Again, when you start the laptop after you install the new drive, make sure it looks for the correct (new) drive (it will probably find it automatically and require no changes). If it doesn't, change the boot order in BIOS.

I attempted to clone a Toshiba M.2 sata SSD with a Samsung 860 M.2 sata SSD and there was an error.
The clone never copied the partition with the operating system.
Just was trying to see if anyone had an answer for my problem.

quote:Hate to ask another needling question, but.... I see you mention "copied". Just want to make sure you "cloned" as opposed to simply copying data from one drive to another. Clone does not equal copy.

What app/utility are you using to clone?? Cloning Utility Examples
