so im in the market for a new laptop, trying to keep it below $2000. basically Im looking for it to be lighter than 4 lbs, battery longer than 8 hrs, and a touch screen is highly preferred but is negotiable. Using it for some basic work programs, streaming, and dabbling in some first person shooter type games.

are there any brands/models that fit well with what im looking for?

I don't have any recs because I don't really keep up with things, but maybe I can help in another way.

Literally any new laptop at any price can do these things

This is where you will need to be more specific. Do you dabble a couple hours per month, per week, or per day? Which games? Do you like a specific keyboard arrangement? Would you like to plug in an external monitor while gaming? Do you want a large-ish laptop screen?

I mean if you're spending $2k it will be able to "dabble" in games at the very least, but more detail would be helpful.

If it weren't for the gaming requirement, I would say go to a store and find a model that feels comfortable to type on, and you like the trackpad and the screen, and one that looks nice and feels sturdy or whatever, then go online and spec it up to your budget.

Primarily a work and personal device (medical field). I havent really gamed in a while but used to and would probably be playing games like counterstike. Not likely anything massive/intensive like WoW. I doubt id be using external monitors, but that seems easy enough to add on later if I change my mind. I very much mean dabble, not full fledged gaming.

probably 13-14" screen bc I want to keep on the lighter side, but 15" isnt a dealbreaker. I know 2k is my upper limit and probably overkill for my uses but I want a nice fast machine. maybe some features like fingerprint. Was hoping there would be a 'check out these 2 brands or model lines' for a good all around laptop in that ballpark.
I appreciate your input, seems like that in that price range most devices would suffice, but I should just go try to check out a variety of keyboard/trackpad setups.

My only suggestion is to check out the Dell XPS line. There are lots of models and configurations, so I can't really help you with that. I just know that they come in the screen sizes you've mentioned, you can get them with touchscreens, fingerprint readers, they're thin and light with good battery life, and the build quality is pretty damned good.

So I would say pick a screen size you like and go from there.

Take a look at the MSI Creator Laptops.

PC Mag Review

Best laptops on the market IMO

Solidly built laptops. I have one about 5y old that is just starting to age from a battery perspective, but the machine itself is a workhorse.

This is going to be a problem. If you want to game (and depending on what you meant by using it for streaming), laptops that are good for this will not have 8+ hour battery life. For instance, I recently picked up a MSI GS66 and even though it has the largest battery legally allowed to fly on a commercial airliner it probably only last 5-6 hours using it for light task (ms office, internet browsing, etc.). So, you need to decide how important the battery or gaming is to you. If you choose to lean gaming you want a laptop with discrete graphics processing, not integrated. Checkout MSI's offerings, Lenovo Legion series, and the Razer Blade.
