New Home Build and Automation/Tech

Where can I find some good info on recommended home automation and tech. Designing a new home and want to be sure to incorporate smart lighting (Lutron?), Sonos, security (Google?), appropriate connectivity (router, cat, etc), where to run lines, etc.
I see Google offers some consulting on how to integrate their products, but hoping to find something I can read on my own. Any suggestions or recommendations on the above?

Youtube link
Check out this guy's channel on youtube. He's mostly dedicated to Home Assistant, but he does go over basic home automation stuff as well. He could give you ideas on where to start.

I looked at Lutron but seemed like a lot of automation that was unnecessary and not worth the cost. Bought TP-Link switches for <$20 a piece that are still smart switches that suited my needs just as well. Went ahead and got the Sonos everywhere just because I know they're quality and it's simple enough for anyone (my wife) to pick up and play without being tech saavy.

So I'd actually change the initial perspective if I were you and instead ask yourself/family, which company do I want to use for home automation? Google, Amazon, Apple/Siri? I've used all 3 and they all have pluses and minuses.
Once you answer that question, then you can find which companies/products work with each home automation service. Most all work with Google and Amazon as they're the biggest players. More are starting to work with Apple/Siri but it's definitely more restrictive.
Personally, I use LIFX bulbs along with a Lutron bridge and its Caseta dimmers. They both work with all 3 (Apple, Amazon, Google) and they're good products.
EDIT: Sonos is a very good product but pricey. I don't necessarily consider those smart products but I have all of their original Play:1s and Play:5s so don't have the 2nd version of those with built in smarts.
If you're in the Apple ecosystem and can hit up BestBuy when they're discounted 100$, the Apple HomePod is legit. That thing really does sound amazing and Siri is catching up to Amazon and Google... slowly.

Home Assistant or one of the other open source home automation controllers should be the brains for a new home build. Wherever possible, use local control to manage automations, only going to the cloud for voice control (e.g. alexa or google).
Home Assistant
I would stay away from Wink or smartthing, and also do not try to use apple, google, or alexa as the "brains." You will be severely limited.

i'm trying out hubitat and don't love it so far because i haven't had the time to put into setting things up the way i want. i am not thrilled about the 'hub of the week' but as you pointed out, i went with this so i could move everything local so worst case scenario is i can still control everything if they go out of business.
