So I see Google finally updated their chrome casts to have a UI and remote. I’m curious about getting one, however, will the remote control volume to a soundbar like the Sonos playbar?
I sadly don’t think it will but anyone know for a fact?

I got one. Was so impressed I bought a second.

As for the sound bar yes. The remote adjust sound bar volume.

There is a specific CEC part of the set up that ensures the chromecast remote controls TV power and volume.

Even a Sonos playbar? Surely it would.
Thanks for info, guess I can swing by bestbuy and grab one tomorrow. Worst case I can return it if it doesn’t.

We still use YouTube tv so the live tv integration looks nice. If they could add espn+ and mlb.tv to that, would be a killer feature.

Not sure about Sonos. I’ve got an LG and Samsung.

However if you hook it up to the TV via HDMI ARC you should be good to go.

Live guide is great as well. Better than the actual guide of YouTube TV

Damn, may not work for the old school Sonos playbar then. It uses optical not hdmi arc. Well, shite.

Well, my shield tv can co trip it cause it has an IR blaster. Does the Google tv chromecast have an it blaster? Google says it does.

I would almost bet money your sound bar, tv power, and such will work flawlessly.

When you set up the device for the first time it literally holds your hand, and trials and errors with you until your sound and power are controlled with the remote.

This is by far the best integration with TV controls I've ever had on a streaming box.

Yea doing some YouTube videos last night it sure looks like it should. I’m gonna go pickup one today. The integration with YouTube tv looks like a real selling point.

We have an Apple TV but lost true remote this week. Could buy a whole new “system” like this for 50$ or spend 50$ for a new dumbass Apple remote that I hate anyways.

Wow ok, so one thing I didn’t realize is how much better Google did this device compared to the Apple TV. So for example, I have:
Hulu
Disney+
Netflix
Hbo Max
Peacock
YouTube
YouTube tv (live integration is perfect)
Movies anywhere (pulls in any movie bought from Apple TV into Google play library)

It curates all of those nicely and integrates it all nicely into each tab of the whole design. The remote most definitely works with my Sonos playbar (gen1) perfectly. I have an iPhone and so does wife but it integrated everything perfectly.

This thing is wayyyyy underrated and the remote smokes the Apple TV remote and the nVidia shield tv remote.
Thanks for pushing me towards this device. It’s now my favorite streaming device.

If anyone uses YouTube tv, I’d say this is very close to a must have device.

Yeah man it’s a true winner. I’ve used Apple TV 4ks, Rokus, shields, MiBox. Tizen and WebOs.

It’s by far my favorite.

Can you be more specific on how it's better than the nvidia shield remote?

Also, i would assume the chromecast itself would not be nearly as powerful as the shield.

I'm sure it's not nearly as powerful, and the shield is probably a better option for those who want to game.

However as someone who has had both, the first party hardware, software Google combination really sets this apart.

For 1/3 of the cost of the shield I get a Polished product direct from Google. Meanwhile when I had the shield the Ambient display with Google Photos was bugged, so I had to download a third party app to set up google photos as my background.

This is just one example.

TLDR: If you want a powerhouse to game with go Shield. If you want a polished, smooth, great product that performs like butter for 1/3 the price. Get the new Chromecast.

Is it wifi only, or is there an ethernet connection port too? I'm wired straight in to my Roku Ultra right now.

I believe that was a google home bug, not nvidia shield bug.

I've experienced it too in the past, but I think it's fixed now.

I'm looking at the remote and they seem kind of similar. I'm just curious what about the chromecast remote you like more.

I actually watched a CNET review and he liked it, especially for $50, but he also ran into several bugs.

Bugs that I'm sure will be fixed over time, but it doesn't appear to be quite as streamline as you may think out of the box.

It’s WiFi only out of the box and so far after a few hours use, no issues but I also have att 1gig service. I think they sell an adapter from Google but that’s a separate cost.

I’ve seen some YouTube videos where you can side load some apps but it’s storage is very limited at 4.4 gigs or something.

As others have said, if you wanna game, shield or Apple TV are better. Pure streaming, this is a winner so far to me.

As for my comparison on the shield remote, I’m comparing it to the OG shield remote. The volume rocker on that thing was some sort of swipey nonsense that didn’t work well and needed line of site badly. This chromecast remote has dedicated buttons for volume, albeit on the side.

Chromecast remote has more dedicated buttons too.
