New Cord Cutter trying to hook up surround sound to AppleTV and FireTV Device

I am a new cord cutter. I have an AppleTV in one room and a FireTV in another. My room with the AppleTV has a surround sound but I can't get it hooked up right for my AppleTV to play the sound. Any suggestions.

Need more info. What's your surround sound setup? Playbar or individual speakers? Do you have a receiver?

What Apple TV do you have? What inputs does the surround have ? The new versions of Apple TV send audio via the HDMI.

You need one of these: HDMI audio de-embedder with Toslink out
I use this for my projector in my media room. Connect the HDMI of the FireTV or AppleTV to the input of this device. It separates out the audio and passes the video as HDMI to your video device.

Apple TV plugs into any HDMI port on your receiver, then run HDMI to your TV. Done.

How is that piece and what did it cost? Does it really work with 4K and ARC ? Does it support Dolby digital ?

My receiver only has (1) HDMI Output

The HDMI output goes to your TV, the receiver will have speaker inputs also.
Most receivers have passthrough, meaning if your receiver isn't on, it still works just uses the TV speakers.
ETA: They may make 2 HDMI out receivers, but that's far from the norm. And if you had 2 HDMI, it's only really beneficial if you wanted to power another monitor.

I don't understand what is so complicated about all of this.
HDMI goes from Appletv to your TV. HDMI or optical cable from tv to surround sound.

How many HDMI inputs?

I am sorry I offended you by my question. I have already tried that and nothing.

Well you didn't say that did you. and I wasn't offended.
What kind of TV do you have?
I have a Sony TV with a similar surround sound system as you, but it's Samsung.
For whatever reason, if I have the optical cable plugged into the receiver and no hdmi, it won't work easily.
When the HDMI is plugged in from the tv to the receiver, it pretty much syncs with the tv when I turn it on. I don't turn the receiver on or off, it does that automatically with the tv power. turn the volume up on the tv, and the surround sound goes up, not the tv.
It may be something as simple as looking at the HDMI ports on your tv and making sure you are using the right one. If your TV has HDMI ARC, this should be easy. check that out on your tv and read this.

that's what makes my setup so easy. I did absolutely nothing other than plugging in HDMI's from my Roku to the tv and then the tv to the surround sound and the surround is synced with the tv pretty much with me doing nothing. You just have to make sure your receiver HDMI cable is going into the ARC HDMI on your tv.
Sometimes my tv will act up and not go through the surround sound for some reason. I simply go to the sound settings and change the speakers from tv to audio system.
Hope that helps.

I didn't even think about the TV. It's a 10 year old Emerson Plasma TV. It doesn't have ARC cap
