I know what a goddamned write-off is.
What I'm trying to figure out is why you (and Fortune) are talking about financial matters at all. Aside from the obvious implications of moving some employees from Nest payroll to Google, this doesn't seem to be financial news. It seems like the obvious thing to do when you have teams at sister companies working on the same shite. They need to be working together.

That doesn't fit CADs narrative.

i wasn't paying $2k+ for that feature alone
Big difference between a $2000 4K display and a $299 display. To say that feature alone (4K) is pretty dumb.

I dont even know why people bitch and moan about investments google does and doesnt make. Nest was like $3B thats a fart in the wind to google and the data alone they've collected from the project will surely be valuable in some other products they launch at some point. Success or failure its nice to see them trying to change things up all the time.

no, no its not. LED has been fairly stagnant since its release. the gimmicks that were curved tvs, backlit LED, 3D and all the stupid software workarounds to fix the contrast ratio issue are background noise to hide the fact the major manufacturers were scratching their heads trying to figure out how to improve on the basic LED panel. about the biggest tech change of the last 7 years is backlit LED which made the tv lighter and thinner but did very little in terms of picture quality.
the only worthwhile innovations of the last 7-10 years are oled and 4k
my $500 vizio has compelling 4K thats about 90% as good as your HDR $2500 samsungs and sonys.
just like my 5.1 soundbar is 90% as good as a dedicated AVR getup for most people who aren't setting up a dedicated media cave in their house and the simplicity no-hassle factor of a soundbar FAR outweighs the PiTA that is wiring up and dialing in a 5.1 or 7.1 sound solution.
just because you always opt for the most expensive product doesn't mean its the best value.

This vizio vs expensive tv talk is comical. Its like the guys buying $35k sports cars that think speed alone makes them equivalent to a ferrari

CAD has the fastest Kia on the Tech Board

LINK

seems this one is doing a pretty good job and right in your $35k price range.
eta of course it depends on whether you are opting for 'looks'/brand name recognition vs performance/fun.

The Verge article that is the follow-up to the OP clarifies this much better and the updated link after the jump even calls CAD's entire thesis into question.
