My dad is a 76 year-old farmer, and his hired hand passed away in November. It’s a big farm covering thousands of acres with little to no cell service, where he could even be in the middle of the woods chasing cows.
I’d like to get him something he can wear or carry at all times that would allow us to find him if needed. (Or he could reach us)
Is there anything you’ve used or seen that would have great battery life, and not be a nuisance to carry? It really needs to be on his person since he could be in any number of vehicles or on foot.
Was looking at the Garmin inReach, but that’s as far as I’ve gotten.
Thanks!

there are probably better options but new iPhones let you use Satellite for texting for free and also for emergency phone calls

Spot beacons are the competitor in the market.

He has an iPhone but I don’t think the “find your iPhone” feature works when there’s no signal. Directionally it could help if he had a signal at some point. I’m more worried about locating him than him getting a call out, honestly. We had a friend in the area have a heart attack and no one knew how to find him.

Technically, it does, but he'd have to remember to turn it on every day. I doubt that suits your needs.

I’ve used spot tracker. Works very well for tracking or for someone to request help to up to 10 personal contacts.
Can also -alert world GEO location help system.
Can also send short message to say “OK” as well.

Hey OP,
No perfect solution. Inreach is nice as it is 2 way, this is not to be understated. SPOT also has a 2 way device ("Messenger") but I believe Inreach is more economical for that.
I have lots of experience with SPOT trackers ("one way" devices) and if you are trying to use it in almost any moderate to heavily forested area it will not get signal often.
I think it may be your best bet overall for price, coverage, and convenience, but if he ends up in heavy woods it won't get signal.
Also, the more economical plan only pings every 10 minutes, to get more discrete tracking gets more expensive.
Upside is it does work provided it has clear view of the sky. I had a nasty off road motorcycle getoff in the NF in rural Idaho in 2016 with no cell service (broke tib fib clean through) and had to get transported out to have ortho surgery. I carry both the SPOT on my bike and a dedicated PLB (ACR) in my camelback. Two is one, one is none.
