Music listening receiver settings/mode??

I'm running a Denon 3600. Love everything "movie" about it, but just can't find what I want out of just simple music listening. I'm streaming, and I also have a record player.
Simple stereo is accurate, but disappointing, multi-ch stereo completely loses the "front stage concert" feel, and then all of the rest of the modes are just so over processed. I seem to like the Dolby Surround mode, but the voices get so much echo put on them. Any happy compromises out there?

For music you should be using Pure Direct mode.

I was just messing around with my Denon 4400, and the Auro-2D Surround also sounds pretty good.
