Macbook pro stuck in an apparent update loop.

I got a notification to update my macbook to OS monterey. When I began updating, it took a while then finally just seemed stuck on "less than a minute remaining." I rebooted, and the same thing keeps happening over and over. I'm fairly certain the issue is that I didn't have enough storage space to perform the update because I did some searching about the issue, and this was listed as a potential cause. I got a notification a while back that my storage was low, but forgot about it.
I've rebooted in recovery mode a couple of times trying to repair the disk as some have suggested online. That didn't work either. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this issue?

Does it ever complete the update? Or are you killing it because it's taking forever?
I had to leave one for about 2 days one time for it to complete the update - I was nervous as hell waiting - but it did eventually finish and everything was fine after that.
Only other thing I can think of is to replace the hard drive with a new one - do a fresh install from the recovery system and then migrate everything back from the old drive.

No, it doesn't finish. I eventually get an error message, and the whole process restarts each time.

Can you boot from any other device and delete or move some files off to make space?
I don't think the recovery console will ever let you get to a finder to do that.
I booted a friends Mac from one of my old backup drives - completely different model but MacOS doesn't care. Once we got his booted up, we could back up files and clean up enough to free up space.
Does Disk First Aid report any errors/issues?
At this point - it would probably be best to back everything up and start fresh - but it's not necessarily your only choice.

Are you backed up in iCloud? Just reinstall from Boot mode

Did some research...You can boot to recovery mode and then insert a USB - format it using Disk Utility. Exit Disk Utility and Click Reinstall OS X - but select your USB drive as the target.
Once you have the USB set up - you can boot holding down the Option key. Select your USB as the boot disk and then you should get to a regular Finder interface.
Now you can either try to free up space or just run Time Machine to back everything up.
If you can free up enough space, hopefully it will finish the update on it's own.
If you have to back up using Time Machine - then you can boot again from the USB, format the main disk and install OS X and then recover everything from your Time Machine backup.

how old is your macbook? If it's an older model it may be too old to upgrade. Click the apple icon and about this mac and it should say what version it is with a year listed and then you can verify if it's compatible.

Can one actually laugh in linux or do you have to write it out in binary to let everyone else know how "l33t" you are?

Late 2013 I think. I can't view the model because I can't get to the finder screen where the apple icon is, but I'm pretty sure that's correct. Just looked up compatibility, and doesn't look like 2013 isn't listed, so that's another potential issue. Not sure why I got the update notification if my machine wasn't compatible though. I have an appointment at Apple to try to get it all straight. Thanks for the help everyone.

99% sure OS X won't install an incompatible update.
Hope it works out....

Time for a new one.
I don't think Monterey is compatible with a machine that old.
macOS Monterey is compatible with these computers

it'll still send you the update notifications even on old systems...and try to install them, but it will fail every single time. You can also look it up by your serial number Serial Lookup but if it is indeed a late 2013 then that is 100% the issue and it's time for a new mac or you'll have to stay with Big Sur

I was wrong...looked up the serial number and it's an early 2015 macbook pro, so should be compatible with monterey.
I'm in the process of reinstalling OS X to a USB drive. It's telling me it's going to take 7 hours and 42 minutes right now. That doesn't sound normal...is it?

Was your hard drive full?
That seems like the most logical reason. No space--

I went to the Apple store tonight and they were able to boot it some sort of way that I wasn't familiar with. Got into my hard drive and backed up some stuff to USB, then deleted it to free up room for the install. I left it with them overnight to complete the install for me.
