MAC VS. PC Desktop

I am in the market for a desktop. I am getting rid of my Laptop and getting a desktop for the family. We have a H&P garbage desktop from a few years back. Thing was slow as hell since the day we bought it. My friend at work is trying to convince me to get a good gaming PC desktop so I can play games with him. I just do not want it to get corrupted with viruses and run horribly slow. I would like to start playing games on PC, but I also have a PS4 for my games. I do like the hardware on the macs though and I never had any real problems with them. If anyone could offer any insight that would be great.

Frankly, I think you deserve a reply from retired trucker.

Buy cheap box. Install Linux. Configure desktop to look like Mac.

then stay off facebook...
It sounds like you're either trolling, or truly believe everything you read about the "Superior Mac"..

Hate to say I am not trolling. I am just not very knowledgeable on this subject. Do you have any recommendations for a good pc desktop?

There is no reason to get a PC anymore unless you needed specific software that isn't compatible.
Older folks need to stop being stubborn and start using safer, more efficient machines. You get what you pay for & it's compatible with all of the devices that are most popularly used.

I agree the home desktop PC is dead
We just saw cross platform gaming announced between XBox and PS. I can only imagine PC users will be brought into the fold as well

Any machine can get a virus. Most of the problems computers have are caused by users not knowing what they're doing.
If all you want is something that will do email and basic web browsing, hell you could just get a really cheap Chromebook and leave it at that. I use mine a lot for work and have specific database needs, so I have a fairly powerful Windows desktop. A hardcore gamer will want a totally different setup.
A bunch also depends on what "ecosystem" you already use. If you're a dedicated Apple user you should probably stick with that. If you're a Gmail/Chrome fan you could go with either a Chromebook or Windows.

I bought an iMac, 2 years ago, and it's been nothing but trouble. It'll start playing random music that won't turn off , til after running a virus scan . Also have problems with it locking up.

iMac gets my vote. I use PC for work and I have a PC laptop that I carry with me for whatever. Both are a pain in the arse, but I have stripped off a lot of the BS to make them run better. Still, I don't like windows but there's certain things I need it for.
At home I have an iMac that I bought new in 2007, it still runs like a champ and I've never had an issue out of it.
I've used that iMac for everything you can imagine, video editing, photo editing, all of my music, downloading anything and everything. Hands down, it has been the best and most reliable computer I've ever touched. I've never had to reload the OS, never had a virus, and I have torrents downloading almost daily.
I've never had anything Windows based come close to lasting 9 years. Hell, you wouldn't make it 6 months with a windows machine not needing to be formatted and reloaded trying to do some of the crap I've done on my iMac.
I also have a new Macbook Air at home, haven't really used it at this point. I only got it because my iMac is so old that it can't support some of the newer software. I'm slowly transitioning everything over to the Macbook.

I still like having a wide format monitor to look at, and having onsite storage for all my data. Do I absolutely need a desktop machine? No, I could get along without it, but for certain applications, it's a hell of a lot more convenient than trying to use a tablet or even a laptop.

You get so much more for your money with a PC vs. a MAC, just watch porn on your phone or pay for a good anti-virus software.
