Used / new, it doesn’t matter. What would you say would be the best bang for my buck?

What should I look for performance-wise?

Don't buy new at that price range, they are all shite.

Buy a high end used one.

For general business use, I'd get something like this:

$516 on Walmart.com

$399 if you pick it up at the Houston Microcenter

You can get a used Dell Precision M4800 Core i7-4810MQ 2.80 GHz 256 GB 16 GB for $330 on ebay.

You don't mention the intended use but that Dell is a tank.

HP on Slickdeals

I'd recommend getting the 16gb of ram and backlit keyboard upgrades, too.
