Logitech will intentionally brick all Harmony Link universal hubs next year, on March 16, 2018. The company has emailed all Harmony Link customers with the bad news.
There is nothing wrong with Harmony Link devices.
The company says a "technology certificate license" will expire next year, which they don't intend to extend.

Logitech is offering a 35% discount for all Harmony Link owners when buying a newer Harmony Hub.

Jesus. How could it have been more dire than the current one?
They should issue refunds, not discounts.

It initially said all harmony products or something like that. I don't know what harmony link is but i dont think i have anything in that line.
eta: on second thought maybe my hub is a harmony link. I'm not sure now.
etaa: i have the regular harmony hub. So i'm good for now.

If they brick one product on purpose, they might as well brick them all as far as I'm concerned. No way in hell will I ever buy a Logitech product in the future.

Is that code for a SSL cert?

It can't be, can it? I mean, aren't those certs like $50?

This is why I hate having every device connected to the internet. I'm all about segregation of tech to avoid this issue and others that arise by letting the companies in control have instantaneous access to force-update and force-install.

For those of you, like me, who just bought that Harmony Ultimate from Costco or Amazon, we're in the clear!

Yeah, or even free. It costs more per year for electricity to run the server.
Their explanation is obviously short on details, but it sounds like they used some sort of 3rd party cert for something security related, and it must be expensive.
IMO, if that's the case, that's just another poor decision they made. The first was making hardware rely on the internet.
Regardless, there simply must be a solution here that Logitech just doesn't feel like implementing. And for that reason I won't be relying on them for anything.
Sometimes I feel crazy for preferring open source whenever possible, but then companies do idiotic things like this and I feel a lot less crazy.

Glad they're doing the right thing now, but it's a damn shame it took all this blowback for it to happen.
There is still the issue of them making poor design decisions to begin with. Does anyone know if their new hubs also require the internet to function?

What’s the difference between the link and hub? I didn’t buy mine so I’m not sure which one I have.
