Laptop replacement recommendations

Looking to replace a 8+ year old Macbook for my wife. It's used at home for take-home work (Medical/non-tech work) and general surfing but not heavy use. Not a WFH situation.
Considerations:
She's not text savvy and can be rough on her tools. I think she would prefer to stick with apple for familiarity and prestige.
I would prefer to find something cheaper that will still last 5+ years and be reliable. I'm more familiar with PCs plus I get employee pricing through Lenovo and HP.
Any recs for a machine that would be cheaper than another macbook but be similarly durable and reliable?
TIA

Avoid the "thin" laptops, they will get way hotter, not last as long, have less slots to add another memory stick etc. I would also avoid the ones with a touch screen and get a normal laptop, not a dual use type crap they are trying to sell these days. I got a normal HP laptop on sale at Officemax in December and I love it. AMD all around, runs Windows 11 fantastic. Got on sale for $250 before all the inflation got so bad on PCs recently. I found it on a "Deal site" that I browse occasionally. www.slickdeals.net

I was definitely planning to avoid ultra thin and touch screen models but that's good advice.
Is it worth trying to find something in the $1300-$1800 range rather than just springing for a $2kish Macbook?

Ive had a Microsoft surface laptop for many years now. It's been the best laptop I've ever used. I've never felt it get hot.

That’s an overkill budget for what your describing.

No question. Sadly, overkill is on our family crest. I was just hoping I could save $500 and buy something that wouldn’t lead to my wife saying I told you I should get a Mac within 4 years.

Check to see if where you live has a MicroCenter - my god they have badass laptops for cheap. MicroCenter is Friggin amazing. They have 2 stores in the Atlanta area if you are ever in the area

MacBook Air M1 starts at $999. It probably suits her needs and fits your budget.
This.
Amazon and Best Buy have them for $799.

I repair laptop frequently, not Macs through, I see the insides and see how different companies construct their products. First advice is to avoid HP, Acer and other bargain brands, yes, people will tell you their HP has been great, but they take a lot of shortcuts. Dell and Microsoft Surface are the best out there, what models depend on you need and habits.
Just as an example, in the last week I have had 5 HP's, 1 Lenovo and 1 old Samsung in for hardware issues.

Apple just introduced the new 15" M2 Air at $1300 for the base config. From your use case comments that should be fine. Since she's using a MacBook, IMO that should be your baseline at the price and it would take a pretty big justification to move off of that.
