Laptop Problems - Can Anyone Diagnose?

I have an HP Spectre x360 laptop that's about 3 years old. Lately I've having 2 things happen with it - the screen will just suddenly go black on me. Not shutdown black, cause the laptop is still running and there's a bit of a black glow to the screen so I know it's not off completely. It won't do anything after that. If I do a hard shutdown and then restart it, it starts up and works fine until the next time it does that. Also, sometimes when I wake it up from hibernation, I will get a screen that says the computer was forced to shutdown b/c it was overheating (or something to that effect). I can hear the fan still running on it, and I don't have the vents blocked, so i don't know what's the deal with that.
Anyway, I can't imagine these are good signs for the longevity of my computer, but I really don't want to have to get a new one right now. I'm hoping someone can diagnose this and suggest an easy fix!!!

Power/sleep settings causing problems? For example, Dell has known issues of laptops not waking from sleep. You could try disabling sleep settings.
The overheating and no monitor could be a graphics card issue but it doesn't look like those laptops come with discrete graphics.
Perhaps you could monitor specific component temps with something like HWMonitor to pinpoint the problem.

The display issue could be because of a display graphics driver, there was a bad one on a dell several years back that caused issues on a particular model when I worked at bestbuy, that was often mitigated by rebooting the pc until we could downgrade and disable updates.

Update the BIOS and Video driver from the HP website.

Assuming this is your model, it's super easy to open the shell. I would take a look to see if you have some crazy amount of dust/hair build up that's legit causing overheating, or possibly locking up the fan which is causing your bios to force a lock up. Assuming everything looks clean, I would follow the other troubleshooting steps that have been listed (monitor temps, update drivers/bios, etc).
