Laptop for Gaming/College

My son has a sweet Desktop gaming setup. He wants a gaming laptop for college. I am not inclined to spend much over 1500. I haven't looked at parts in 2 years, so I am woefully out of the loop whether Ryzen is where I want to be. He is looking at Legion and Zephyrus options.

Lenovo Legion 7i. Try and snag one with a 4080 on Black Friday coming up. Between lenovo sales and cashback through rakuten (it's gotten as high as 10-12% lately), may be able to swing it for $1500

I got the victus gaming laptop from Costco for $900 plus tax. It's been great strictly for work purposes.

I don't see anything under 2000 for a 4080.

Assuming you are talking about actual gaming and not something like Minecraft or the Sims.
Honestly gaming laptops that are off-the-shelf kind of suck and/or they are very expensive. You also can't really upgrade laptops, especially in that price range. Throw in that "gaming" laptops aren't really portable like you would think. They are heavier and tend to need a larger brick for more power and have very short battery life. Plus you aren't going to want to lug that up to the library along with the peripherals.
He better bet would be to build a desktop for gaming and then just get a cheaper laptop for school. You could do both for close to the $1500, and then he can upgrade the desktop as needed.

Is he going to take it to class? Cause if he goes gaming laptop, it may weigh twice as much as a regular laptop. Depending on what he plays, he could get an ultrabook (thin and light) with enough power to play most non bleeding edge games for under 3 pounds. But almost no “gaming” laptops fit that bill. Besides, he’s going to end up on someone’s XBox or PS5 in all likelihood.
