Is Amazon Fire TV (2nd gen) the ultimate KODI box?

Been doing research on this and it appears from PRICE to SPEED, things like gigabit ethernet and 4K streaming the Fire TV is the perfect media delivery system for your tv.
These are the 4 things you can't find together in any other box:
- gig ethernet (necessary for smooth 4k content streaming)
- $99 (cad is a cheap SOB)
- 4K capability (dumb not to buy a box to future-proof this)
- fast quad core 2Ghz chip
For my purposes, I don't care about most of the KODI add-ons, I just need a way to get 4K video content from my NAS to my TV screen.
I am hard-wiring my TV and am using an ethernet switch so I'll be able to wire Fire TV and tv (for native apps) separately and not worry about WiFi hiccups.
- ROKU 4 cannot install KODI natively due to the fact its not an android OS.
- Raspberry Pi is great if you are willing to be nickel-and-dimed to death buying all the pieces you need.
- If you already have a nice PC next to your TV thats the cheapest route but many people don't have this configuration.
As much as I hate to admit it..looks like there's an Amazon Fire TV in my future.
GO AMAZON!

Everyone that I know says the Nvidia Shield is much better and worth the $100 premium over the Fire TV. I have a first gen Fire TV and it buffers every now and then but when I switch to a different stream (I prefer Primewire) the buffering goes away. For the low price of the Fire TV and the mostly reliable performance I don't need anything more.
I'm sure the people in Hell are enjoying the cold front you sent their way.

I've been happy with mine, after using Roku amd Chromecast for awhile. One bonus, that I didn't expect, is that you can cast YouTube from your phone, just not other streaming video in Chrome, like you can with Chromecast(atleast I haven't found a method yet). I bought mine specifically so I could use Vue and drop Dish.

not sure i follow on this.
fyi, netflix and youtube can be cast natively from my phone to my new vizio with NOTHING attached to it. those 2 apps in particular are using a generic form of 'casting' which doesn't even require a chromecast or any other type of box to play to your tv.
my problem is the biult-in youtube reciever on the tv is limited to 1080p and doesn't support 4K so i'll need the amazon box to do 4k.
i'm not saying 4K content is a deal breaker either way, but i would be dumb not to consider a box capable of delivering that if i'm considering purchasing one.

I bought a Fire TV Stick on Prime Day. Installed Kodi and have essentially mothballed my Apple TV.
I consider it a huge advantage to have Kodi, Netflix, and Prime Video all on one streaming device.
The 5GHZ wifi connection has not buffered....ever and we are a family of gamers and streamers
I love the damn thing

vs gen1 fire or gen2? it would have to be something amazing to me to be worth another $100 and i'm not seeing it looking at the specs
They were comparing it to the first gen. I don't know anyone that upgraded from the first to second gen Fire TV. Even the stick can run Kodi well enough. If I'm getting tv and movies for free I don't mind putting up with a little buffering every now and then.

but are you a family of 4K streamers?

i'm just making sure i don't start out on shaky footing. wired is always better than wireless imo if you have the option.

Haven't tried this. Due to the general shittyness of TV apps, I don't even connect my TVs to my network anymore.

Fire TV 2 is great
I just picked one up yesterday at my local Staples, last one they had. Stayed up late last night loading kodi, entering login info on all the apps, and just becoming familiar with the UI. It's a little confusing and overwhelming at first.
What I really need to do is get my internet hard-lined to it via ethernet. Our modem/router are upstairs in my wife's office, and the wifi signal isn't the best.

Won't be smooth at 30fps it's limited to.

Not yet but it is coming
My kid's rooms both have wired Gigabit connections to their Xbox/Computer. I'm just too lazy and it's too damn hot to run one to our living room and master bedroom
