Internet options at a camp?
We have a fishing camp with satellite TV and decent cell reception. Only accessible by boat, so no cabled internet options. We usually just use our phones at hotspots. However, we have started renting it out and missed out already on 2 rentals worth $2,000+ because we didn’t have internet.

What are pros and cons or a permanent cellular hotspot or satellite? Am I missing other options?

I would imagine satellite internet would be your best option.

+2 on that option. I set that up for my mom’s home and it works like a charm.

Get one of those 4G jet pack hotspots.

Whatever was posted in that thread has all dead links now.

Thanks for the link to the post. Yes, the eBay link is dead, but the rest explains how you don’t really need it anymore. That looks like a great solution.

To summarize the other thread:
1. Buy new SIM card
2. Use IMEI generator for LTE iPad on ATT activation page (in other thread). It may take several IMEI’s before one works to activate SIM card.
3. Pop SIM card into Nighthawk M1 or similar hotspot.
4. Hook hotspot up to WiFi router to share to rest of house.

Costs: couple bucks for SIM card, $200 for hotspot, $100 WiFi router, and $30/month with no contract.

You get unlimited data that is depriotized after 22GB, not throttled, at LTE speed that you can see is worth it by Speedtest on your phone. Also, you can bring the hotspot with you traveling.

One person mentions AT&T sorting this out with a september 2018 goal. So my question is does this still work or any chance of it ending soon?

My thoughts are if it is sorted out, you just need to pay for a mobile hotspot plan instead since you have everything else purchased and set up.

If you had another location with internet in line of sight of the camp you could use a point to point too.

I was out in the middle of nowhere near Kinder this weekend sitting on a sandbar watching canoes go by on the Ouiska Chitta when I noticed I had full bars, did a quick speedtest and got 30 mbps on my phone! Must be a tower right there.

What I thought was interesting was that just 2-3 years ago some other people brought a full satellite setup out there to watch a LSU game. Now you can just stream the whole thing. Awesome.
