Does anyone know of a program or widget or something other than gchat or AIM (showing my ignorance here
) that can run on some older PCs for communication in a small office? Need something to discuss accounts privately because my office is too small to get privacy from the customers. TIA

We also use Skype.
GroupMe is another option if you want a free web based and mobile format.

We use Skype as well. The laptops with webcams allow video conferencing. You can also share your screen with others. Helpful if you’re giving a presentation in a meeting where people in other offices or locations are calling in.

I'm moreso talking about being able to communicate with a "texting" or typing format... I am a dentist with a small office and occasionally need to discretely discuss fees, discounts, etc with my receptionist as a patient is checking out. So I'm looking for something where a little message alert will pop up on her computer screen at the front desk and I can tell her codes, charges, adjustments, etc without the patient listening in or seeing us chatting behind a wall about it.
Sounds weird I know, but dentistry can have a lot of ambiguous situations and trying to factor in insurance benefits, write-offs and charge appropriately can often require spur of the moment discussion.

We use skype for business at work (it's not just a video conferencing software) I think we're about to start a push away from Skype for Business to Zoom for all our instant messaging and video conferencing needs though.

Trillian sounds like it would be an option.

Has Skype added the screenshot feature yet? If not, I like webex better because of being able to screenshot stuff. If that doesn’t bother you then Skype is better

CISCO Jabber is good and can be used for 1 to 1 privacy or group chats.

We use Cisco Jabber as well. It’s nice because it connects phone, messaging, and email together. Im a fan.

We're have an old Jabber server that mostly only the optional and engineering tech nerds use, but we also use Skype for Business company wide. I prefer Skype, honestly.
