Go with this list instead.

The purpose of an SSD is speed. You put your OS, programs, and any files you access often on it. It is way faster than a standard HDD. That's the most simple way to explain it. It's a static drive with no moving parts. From the moment you click on an icon or file to the moment the SSD locates it and opens it is almost instantaneous unlike an HDD.

In one of the NewEgg tutorial videos, he uses an adhesive to mount the cooling fan. Will your suggested list require same?

That's not adhesive. That's thermal compound made to conduct heat from the CPU to the fan and radiator more efficiently. The CPU cooler will come with some from the factory but you can buy some aftermarket that is a better product. Some people will say differently but I have always had good luck with Arctic Silver 5. It's like $6 I think.

My monitors have DVI connectors. Does your list provide for these connectors in back of the case?

The connectors will be on the GPU and DVI is the standard. I don't think many GPUs come with VGA anymore unless it's an older card or bottom line card. They will also most likely have a mini HDMI connector on them but you can look in the description of video cards on Newegg and it will tell you what type of connectors come on the card.

Yep - after I thought about again, that's what I figured. Makes sense now...

Is one included with this CPU?

**Ooops. Missed this: "Includes CPU Cooler Yes"

In Stout's second build, which I recommend over the first (to clarify, use THIS part list: LINK ), he included an aftermarket cooler which will come with thermal compound that's just as good as artic silver 5. So you can ignore the cooler that comes with the CPU. The Hyper 212 is quieter and more effective.

If you live in BR, I can help with the build. Or via Skype, which I've done before for another TD poster.

Duly noted (I noticed the 8350 in the parts list captioned "video editing 2"). I might take you up on that Skype session...

I built a photo/video editing pc earlier this year for around your budget. Here's the part list. I couldn't be happier with it. All of my Adobe programs run lightning fast on it.

Thanks for sharing this.

**I have one more nit-picky question. In the NewEgg tutorial vids, he makes no mention of the coated tip of his philips screwdriver. I'm assuming it's a non-magnetic screwdriver, but is there any significance to that dark coating on the tip? Anything special I should be looking for when I pick my tools?

**OK - actually one more question... hoping someone could recommend a decent optical drive to add to my parts list. I really don't see a need for Blu-Ray but a cd/dvd with read/write would be useful.

I cant recommend the noctua fans enough.. they are ugly as hell but my computer runs dead silents under heavy load.

Edit: I just noticed the noctua fans arent one my part list. I added them and they are great!

All the parts are in. Well the blessed day arrived (today) and I rolled up my sleeves to get this thing built. Right ut the gate, I run into problems. Two surprises (1 really dumb on my part;the other a manufacturer screw up).

1. There's no sound card! I went blindly by the list from pcpartspicker.com but alas, no sound card. Am I missing something? Is the sound card now incorporated into the mobo?

2. The CPU cooler - the standoff screw threads that came with the Cooler Master 212 Plus are clearly too big to fit into the hole in the mobo. I emailed Cooler Master just to see what they say. I assume the easy fix is to go down to the parts shop and simply get compatible standoffs that are exactly the same height as the ones that came with the cooler.

Here's my list: LINK

What a bitch!!! And I was so excited to put it together today.

Yep, on-board audio. That's been the norm for many many years. Some might argue that it's not very good, but the technology has improved a lot. Most people are using on-board audio, and unless you are a true audiophile and/or have some high-end high resistance headphones, you won't notice the difference between the motherboard's on-board audio and a good dedicated sound card. Your motherboard will have drivers for the audio, once everything is installed.

Nope, no need to e-mail cooler master or go to the hardware store. With AM-socket motherboards, you need to remove the mounting bracket and backplate that's already attached to the motherboard. All you need is a phillips head for that.

After that, the standoffs should screw into the included backplate perfectly, and secured with the included nuts.

Go here for instructions (with images): LINK

Much better than the included cooler master instructions.

That's the first thing I did, but the 4 standoffs that came with the Cooler Master cooler are really big. No way they can screw into the mobo. See pics below:

I looked high and low inside the packaging for another set of smaller standoffs but no joy. There's no way the 4 standoffs that came with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus can fit in those holes. Once again, am I just not seeing something here? Is it as simple as going to a PC parts place and getting standoff of that fit (with exactly the same height?? Logically speaking, with smaller threads in the standoffs, with that weaken the stability of the installation??

If the cooler only came with one set of standoffs, you are missing some parts. Those look like the LGA 2011 standoffs. You need to e-mail cooler master for the non-LGA 2011 standoffs, or look harder in the box and in all of your pile of parts/boxes for the other set of standoffs to be 100000% sure you didn't misplace them.

You could try to find some smaller ones at a hardware store, but if they aren't the exact height, you risk damaging your CPU or motherboard.

I looked at least a dozen times for another set of standoffs. They're simply not there. I already email CoolerMaster but haven't heard back (they're still sleeping). I'm with you on the exact height (see my previous post). That's why I'm going down to a PC parts place rather than a hardware store.

Also looks like there might be washers on top of those holes that could be attached with adhesive. I wonder if any part of that could be popped off. I literally can't find a single thing via google that mentions this issue with an extreme3, though.

I thought about that but if I over-torque it, there's no turning back. I might try with "reasonable" force to pry it off.

I did find that people who ordered this exact same cooler had similar problems. Maybe they just forget to put in the correct standoffs every once in a while. I have all the luck.

OK - problem solved. I called CoolerMaster tech support (they were very helpful). I slight mis-understanding.... I was trying to install the CoolerMaster bracket of the top side of the mobo. I didn't realize that the stock mobo bracket (with small screw holes sticking through the top side) was still on the underside and had to be removed. When I removed the stock mobo bracket, the screw holes came with it. I replaced the bracket on the underside of the mobo with the CoolerMaster bracket, inserted the CoolerMaster standoffs from the top side - through the mobo - and secured them to the bracket with nuts. Done!

Duh. Learning....

After all these years, I can assemble a PC like a 12-year-old laborer in an Apple factory, but I still don't rush the cooler installation.
