I'm sick of Cox's standard modem/router combo

I'm having severe connection stability issues and it cuts out regularly. I use it for work very often and considering the devices we have throughout the house, it's really messing things up. The speed seems to suffer when it's going through its cutouts as well.
So...this is current setup.
And this is the old router I had that I liked a lot before I got this combo POS.
If the router is still good, I may just need a new modem. I'm open to most things, just don't want to be breaking the bank.

I just got a new modem/router from Cox and my speeds are finally above what my tier is. Previously I was using an old Docsis 2.0 modem and a previous generation Apple router. I tried multiple Docsis 3.0 modems with the Apple router and I was always dropping my connection. With the old setup I was getting low 30mbps and now I'm getting high 50's and into the 60's. The range is also much better. I'll post a pic of it when I get home.

Don't have a splitter. I have DirecTV so the only Cox line I have is this Internet coax straight to the modem.
I'm thinking I'm gonna try a new modem and use my same router. Hopefully that gets it stable again

If you're looking for a new modem, the DPC3010 by Cisco can be had used on Amazon for under $18 on prime (I own it and endorse it. Bought one used myself).
If you're looking for a new router, I can scrounge up another rec.

Is there any reason couldn't just hook my router up to their modem and try it? I'm thinking it's just the router aspect of the thing that's crappy. But I'm wondering if it will work since its a combo

Could also be the problem, and the same solution..I was burning through modems (3 over the last year..One of theirs, two of mine)..When they finally came to my house, the signals were off the charts and a splitter was put in to tone it down...Now, I get a fairly stable 100-103 down

There are 7 offers (as of about two minutes ago) that are $17.95 or less and "very good" condition. 6 of them are available with Prime shipping. I bought mine used from Amazon with no complaints. I don't think the deal can be beat, and it's one of the recommended Cox models.

We had a problem with it dropping a lot (2 to 3 times every hour) we called and they told us to reset and change the password. Believe it or not that fixed it

Listen to me. Go to Cox and switch out the router. They upgraded speeds/service a few months back and it doesn't wrok well with the older ones.
I went yesterday and switched and my connectivity issues are GONE. Plus, the upgrade in their service speeds was free.
I thought it was my router for the longest time.
___mine was not a combo. It was the straight internet/phone modem
FYI....cancelled phone service, new router, and moved to the "gold plan". Bill went down $70+ per month!!
Oh, and service guy comes out monday to switch my 3 DVR boxes out for that new system they have, I think it is Contour. FINALLY, if I have something DVR'd in the living room, I can watch it in the bedroom. They connect to the network and send the stuff to which ever box you want to view it on. The swap of these is free.
It may have been the single best outing I've had in a Cox office ever.

FYI, I had this problem as well. I had to put a splitter on my line to lower the power level. With my modem, you can check the levels by going to LINK . Your modem may have something similar.

If you do use a splitter instead of an attenuator, it's a good idea to use 75 Ohm terminators on the unused ports. It wouldn't hurt to screw them onto unused but connected outlets, too.

Thanks for the heads up. In the back of my head I was wondering if that was an issue. Gonna call and get them to give me just their regular new modem and use my own router.
It's been absolutely horrific the last couple weeks. Anything I do on any device usually gets interrupted about every 15 mins. Which I thought was super strange because this has never been an issue for me.

Sounds exactly what was happening to me.
They up'd the speed and it somehow effected the older modems. Mine was 3+ years old. Technology closet so I know it was never messed with. Guy came straight out and said it's common since they amped up service, and gave me an updated new one, no questions asked.

What you're referring to is the phasing out of the Docsis 2.0 in favor of Docsis 3.0 with the faster speeds it is capable of. If you are renting from Cox, it's close to a sham that it wasn't replaced in a timely fashion when the Docsis 2.0 modems were no longer recommended (in New Orleans, this was close to 12-18 months ago) in favor of the new ones when they pushed this big "speed increase." In any instance, the modem I linked for $20ish used is part of the new standard. It's a much better deal than renting, other than when the next generation comes out (you're probably at least 5 years out from it being a standard, much less adopted and implemented). It's literally one of the ones on Cox's web page of recommended routers. For anyone who isn't very concerned with upload speed, i would recommend it over the Motorolla Surfboard strictly because it's so readily available secondhand for dirt and performance is roughly equal. If you, for whatever reason, need >5mbps consistently on the upload side, for one, I have no idea why you are looking at consumer-level modems, but the DPC3000 from Cisco can be consistently had for $30-40 (it's also Docsis 3.0 with the fancy 8x4 bonding that is basically the standard for "good" modems at home, and uses a Texas Instruments chipset that, from what I have read, outperforms the Broadcom chip in the 3010. Again, if this matters to you (and they aren't wildly pronounced differences. One was hitting 4.5 up, the other hitting the user's cap of 5 in the only head to head review I've seen), you're probably barking up the wrong tree entirely with both of these and need to look at commercial stuff. Or, in other words, the cheaper one is fine and almost guaranteed a better deal than to pay Cox $3-7/mo for a modem that can be replaced for $20 if it does go bad in the future that, as far as anyone's best bet, won't be replaced as a standard for the foreseeable future.
