184 Mbps / /23.1 MBps download. Eatel ISP. What does this mean? 23 megabytes a second? I’m downloading at 23.1 megabytes a second?
Currently downloading the he headers of a certain newsgroup at 87.0 MBps/10 MBps. There are a fricking trillion headers. Almost.

Yes 23 MBps (megabytes with the big B) is the same as 184 Mbps (megabits with the little b). Notice the 8X difference, there are 8 bits in 1 byte.

But yes, the fact that people can’t seem to decide whether to display bits or bytes is unnecessarily confusing to the average end user.

Normally its bits for bandwidth and bytes for storage.

And then Steam displays transfer speed in bytes by default

Thank you all! And through Wi-Fi the download speed is 1.5 MBps. The other numbers were from being plugged straight into the router/modem. I knew Wi-Fi was slower, but damn.
There’s no way to plug my laptop up where I normally sit without having an Ethernet cable exposed for people to trip over, so I guess I’m going to have to come up with a server that is plugged straight on into the modem, right next to it, and log in and surf and download from Usenet or wherever else remotely.

quote:You need to fix your wifi. Properly configured wifi can easily achieve speeds several times faster than the wired speeds you're talking about. 200mbit should not be a problem for wifi. Check the wifi on your laptop, make sure it supports 802.11ac or 802.11ax, and that it's connected at ac or ax instead of a/b/g/n. Then check your router signals with a mobile app or something. Make sure your laptop is connected to the 5ghz signal. You might even be able to find in Windows where it says the speed that it negotiated in megabits.

Run some speed tests. Move around and run more of them.
If your router just isn't cutting it, get a better one or a mesh system. Seriously, 12Mbps/1.5MBps is far too slow to suffer through.

Thanks, I was wondering if I could do something on that end.

I love old school! Almost got X-News again, for sentimental reasons, but decided to go back to Newbin Pro, instead. I’m trying to customize it when I can (like quit showing files already downloaded when searching the groups). I’m having so much fun again! It’s a shame You can’t trust cracked programs anymore. Loved the DVD creation, music editing, and video editing programs I use to get, then throw away.
