I had zero expectations, and thought it'd be fairly gimmicky.

Boy was I wrong. The technology on this thing is fricking amazing. I've messed with it for maybe 2 hours total since I got it last week, but I'm already impressed. If you're looking for last minute gift ideas, I'd highly recommend.

I have a $1000 Valve Index and aboslutely love it, but decided to scoop the Quest 2 during Black Friday just to see what it was all about. My young cousins love coming over and playing with the Index, so I figured it would fun to get a standalone unit that I could bring to them since i can't be lugging my PC around. I was expecting it to considerably worse than the Index given the all-in-one design without a computer giving it the horsepower.

To say I'm blown away is an understatement. It may not have the wide FOV or the finger sensing controllers that the Index does, but it 100% holds its own in every other regard. The inside-out tracking is exceptional and it's really nice not having to deal with lighthouses. I've been playing Resident Evil 4 and it's stellar. Just really impressed at how nice it is given the price point.

To anyone wanting to get into it, I did the Frankenquest 2 build and highly recommend it. Massive upgrade over the stock setup.

Buy this: $100 (paid $60 on Black Friday)

and this: $20

and this: $15

and this: $15

First link is the HTC Deluxe Audio strap. Huge upgrade in comfort with far better adjustability, durability, and sound quality.

Second link is the 3d printed brackets that allow you to attach the DAS to the Quest 2

Third link is a 10,000mAh power bank. Gives you an additional 6 hours of time (the Quest 2's 2hr battery life is pretty pathetic tbh)

Fourth link is the best option I've seen for attaching the battery packs.

Thanks man,I'm going to buy those.
Any other app/recommendations?

How have you been

Exactly.

This part may be more suited for the money board...while I'm already pretty big into NFTs, this made me really get the Facebook to Meta move. This is the future. Imagine having a not so great life, and you can just out on so goggles and explores places you couldn't IRL. Is it the same experience? No. But a two hour escape from your shitty reality, worth it.

Looks like some pretty good upgrades.

I got a Quest 2 last year for christmas. Awesome and fun. But by about March it had found a home in a drawer and i think ive only pulled it out once since. I have a three and six year old and I dont have the time to fully immerse myself into VR world to do anything.

Absolute must-owns are

RE4
Walking Dead Saints & Sinners
Beat Saber

If you have kids, lots of good options as well with Star Wars, Keep Talking & Nobody Explodes, Job Simulator, etc

Walking Dead Saints & Sinners

So I’ve got a PS5 and they’ve been having some free VR games like that one coming out I’ve been grabbing just to have for if I ever get one.

So I’m assuming this is a standalone? Does this work with PlayStation by any chance to play those? I was wondering ho3 you got the games and whatnot.

Saints & Sinners was the free VR game of the month a little while ago. It is VR only

Sorry, I know that.

I meant, can an oculus play PS5 games or it’s through ‘oculus” somehow

Oh gotcha.

Nope, PlayStation can only play via PSVR. The Quest 2 has its own store built into the OS.

One of my first thoughts was to get two in case two people in the family want to play together….but im also guessing you’d have to get everything twice in order to do that

yes we got two and most games require dual purchase to play against one another.

Is it worth it if you don’t have a gaming pc?

I enjoy watching all of the VR "fail" videos. Idiots freaking out, scared out of their minds, screaming, running into walls and falling all over the place. I have yet to see a single person step off or jump off the skyscraper plank without busting their a$$.

This is just one of many VR "fail" videos.

Didn’t want to start a whole new thread, but. Looking to grab one of these. Is it worth going up to the 256? Wasn’t sure how big the games were averaging.

Despite me voicing concerns over this, my in-laws bought the Oculus for my 6 year old without realizing what it was.

What can a 6 year old do with this? Any parental settings I need to turn?

I’ve got the app so I can watch him at least, but the free games are pretty limited (Rec Room seems to be most appropriate).

It’s already running it’s course in our house. It’s a bit of a hassle getting him setup and going, and he is to the point of “what do I do” in Rec Room. Right now, as far as I can tell, he just runs around slapping people.

I don’t completely want to discourage him using it, but I definitely don’t want him going down the rabbit hole of “why should I go outside, I can just put my headset on and pretend to throw a ball”. At least with the switch, we are interacting and playing together.

Having just tried one myself for the first time over the break, there’s absolutely no way my 6 year old would know what the hell to do. My 10 year old is probably cutting it close.

My 6 year old wants to get on mine whenever he sees me on it. I can load up a video or something and let him wonder around. But as you said. ZERO chance he could manage it on his own.
