frick Chrome and FF!!! FF for things crashing and Chrome for being a RAM hog.
I use Opera which is based on Chrome, but runs smoother, has a built in ad blocker, and you can install an extension that will let you run Chrome extensions on it.

Haven't used Opera in many years. Might give it a try again based on your recommendation.

What is the extension? I've used opera in the past and liked it but some websites didn't support it.

Installed Opera last night and it is working well so far. It does seem to be allowing more pop-ups than Firefox; using a blocking hosts file with both (a bit odd). Still, in other regards it seems smoother and more responsive than Firefox. One thing that irritates me about Firefox is often having to click twice on links to get them to activate. And no, not double-clicking, rather click and wait, nothing happens and then clicking the same link again and then it takes me to the link destination.

My biggest gripe with FF has been flash player. Videos crash, I get those messages that say stop continue debug. I've tried everything I can think of to stop it or fix it. Meanwhile I can get the same videos to play on Edge or Chrome with no issues at all.

Which is fine as long as they don't blatantly promote their political agenda in my face.
